Genetically Modified Foods
In North America, 80% of the foods people eat contain GMOs. GMOs or Genetically Modified Foods are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. Many known food like snack bars or crackers contain GMOs. Scientists around the world debate whether GMOs are suitable or harmful to humankind. Each of them have their own reasons for the pro/con of GMOs. GMOs cause many health problems to humans and animals. GMOs can also ruin the environment. Finally, GMOs work against helping stop hunger. Genetically Modified Foods are bad for humankind.

Studies show that GM food can leave material behind inside people. These may cause long term problems. As an example, genes inserted into GM soy can transfer into the DNA of bacteria that are living inside of people. Many of the GM crops are made to withstand herbicides. A company called Monsanto sell Roundup Ready crops, that are designed to survive the uses of their Roundup herbicide. According to the the IRT, “Between 1996 and 2008, US farmers sprayed an extra 383 million pounds of herbicide on GMOs,” (10). Overuse of the Roundup resulted in ‘superweeds,” resistant to the herbicide. This made farmers use more of the herbicide.
