The Ahlspiess was a thrusting spear developed and used in Germany and Austria around the 15th and 16th century. The Ahlspiess had a large pointed spike (which was approximately a meter in length) on the end of a round wooden shaft (1.6 to 1.8 meters in length) secured by a pair a langets extending from the sockets. The ahlspiess had a metal disc or a guard at the end of the spike used to protect the hands or even block an opponent's strike. There were also ahlspiess in the 14th century but had a short and more wide handle when the spike was about the length of a small sword and at that time the Italians called it the Candeliere because of the candle like form it possessed.
