There are three periods that occurred during urbanization to the present day; whereas urbanization was directly related to industrialization. The migration from rural areas to the city shows you how inventions changes society to pave the way to the modern day.
The first period is between 1820-1870 and about 6% of the population lives in the urban area. Cities were constructed in a way to serve as multi-function purposes. At that time modern processes or conveniences were not in place, like indoor plumbing. Nothing was separate.

The old common law, the Doctrine of Separate Spheres, which wives are limited to the domestic sphere and the husbands had the public sphere, was nearing an end. The time when men provided for the family and earned the money for the household was not enough anymore. During this decade more married women entered the workforce and earned 40 percent less than a male counterpart. Women started to take measures themselves by organizing movements. Women needed a culture change for equal pay and to end domestic violence.
The Seneca Falls Convention was the first women’s rights convention to deal with their conditions and rights. The Declaration of Sentiments became the most important document by identifying their right to vote. This attracted national attention and soon other conventions followed. The National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) was created and supported a constitutional amendment for women’s suffrage. Soon after this would split and the American Women Suffrage Association (AWSA) was created. The main difference was that the AWSA believed that success could be achieved through state legislation. They stayed divided for 21 years to finally merge into the National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA).
