Unlike the way John Stossel sees it in his documentary, Is America Number One, America is no longer the greatest country in the world. While we are better off than some of the countries that there are out there such as India, a country that is so overpopulated that it is hard to even compare the two countries, we are still not at the top of the list, literally. As we were once known for freedom and equality for all people, incredible political leaders, and rankings far ahead of other countries, we as Americans seem to forget that times have changed and that other countries have caught up to us. One of the main arguments that is brought up when people are asked why America is so great is freedom and equality. Yeah, it is fantastic that we are free but... were not the only ones.…

In some respect, the thought of two superpowers struggling for expansion does make sense. However, Isaac and Bell dwell on this thought as well, but in words by Odd Arne Westad, the comparison between the Soviet Union and the United States in the sheer military and economic strength are unbalanced; therefore, categorizing the Soviet Union as a superpower with the United States was not accurate to portray the Cold War. Instead, The United States feared of the Soviet Union through the difference of ideology, the spread of a different political ideology was what the United States feared most; thus, the containment approach was the step taken by the United…

American exceptionalism can be a contributing factor leading them to want to excel even on trade. Nevertheless, trade is not about who is the winner in the game, trade is about who has a better comparative advantage. In the eyes of the world, America’s number one place is getting obscured by that of China to the point that Americans see it as a backlash. In reality China is changing so rapidly that I am afraid America will be able to keep up with China. But China’s rapid growth should not be an intimidating factor for America, and as the author stated “Stop Blaming China and India”.…

Although many Americans view the United States to be declining, whether it be due to our political position or influence in other countries, I oppose this idea. I believe America to not be declining, but rather to be plateauing in growth while other countries are advancing. Another reason I view America to still be in the top ranks is because the United States is a land of opportunities to its’ own citizens and others around the world. America is willing to accept change within our country and the growth of other countries by supporting them. I believe America is not declining, but rather plateauing while other countries are growing.…

However, the biggest problem of smart power is the threat it poses to the United States as powers such as China and India are effectively transitioning their power to smart power. India has a significant amount of hard power within military resources and soft power with an established democracy and influential popular culture through Bollywood. While India doesn’t have the power resources to be a challenger to the United States on its own, a coalition between India and China could overpower the United States (174). Similarly, China has a major advantage in hard power because it has the largest army and the largest military budget but China also has a major advantage in soft power because it has the highest rate of economic growth and the most Internet users of all the countries (177). China is the most likely contender from all the superpowers to balance or even surpass American power (178).…

Looking out from the inside of this nation, no, I do not believe that America is the greatest country in the world. Just like Will's opinion, I believe that we very well could have been the best in the past. Racist people were more common, sexist people were more common, more conflict was common.…
