In the play Julius Caesar, Antony’s speech at the beloved Julius Caesar’s funeral has numerous ways of persuasion. Antony uses devious ways to change the feelings of many. Following his devious way Antony joins the group of conspirators, but that is not the whole truth. Antony says he is entirely on their side. He shakes their bloody hands to show that he has joined them. Everyone believes Antony is telling the truth. Antony has a mischievous plan for revenge. Shortly after, he is asked to say a speech at Caesar’s funeral. Brutus tells him he can only make a speech if he speaks no ill of the conspirators and he can speak good wishes of Caesar. Antony agrees to Brutus’s request at the moment. In his speech he strategically uses logic, persuasion, and emotion on the audience to turn them towards himself and Caesar. …show more content…
Antony states he is not present to praise Caesar but to bury him. Later, he says the wrongs of the conspirators will live on, but the positive will die with them. Then he exclaims, Brutus is an honorable man, but Caesar was ambitious. He asks, “Is this the work of an ambitious man?” He plays the words to make it sound as though Caesar was a common man. Antony logically places his facts in the speech to draw the audience closer. He plays on the emotion of the audience, the most important aspect of the speech. Antony says Caesar was his best friend, but the conspirators were also his friends. At this point in the speech he shows extreme emotion, and says all the men of Rome loved him. Antony persuades the audience he is the only true man to love and mourn Caesar. He convinces the people there feeling towards Caesar is wrong. Antony continues to use tactics, by the end, the convincing speech wholeheartedly convinces the audience to love Caesar and follow Antony’s
