What Are Some Examples Of Exaggeration In Romeo And Juliet

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare tells the story of Romeo a hopeless romantic and Juliet a girl who over exaggerates everything that she does. Their story starts at a party thrown by Juliet's family where these two lovers first meet. Everything seems to be perfect until they find out each other's lasts names. After they find out that their love is forbidden fights seem to break out for every little thing. With all of these fights breaking out death is surely no stranger. But when death starts to pave its path of destruction, families are broken and friendships are lost. When death strikes its final victims the story of Romeo and Juliet will die with them. It has all the makings of a classic farce. There are multiple examples of exaggerations throughout the play, that make it seem as if the story was a comedy and not a tragedy. Mercutio is Romeo’s best friend says that “poor Romeo” is already dead. This seemed to be one of Shakespeare's many attempts to make the play more uplifting and to lighten the mood a little. During the play Juliet is set up for a marriage with a man named Paris. When she denies the offer her father gets aggressive and threaten to kick her out onto the streets. Her mother tries to help but is not successful in her attempt. She then goes on to tell Juliet, “Talk not to me, for I will not speak a word.” Her mother is mad to the point where she will no longer speak to her daughter. In the last couple of lines of the play the prince of Verona announces that there has never been a story of “more woe” than that of Romeo and Juliet. The characters of the play exaggerate almost everything that they do and say. Their actions don’t seem realistic on any level. The characters that appear in this play add some comic relief to the play, but they end up making it so that people don’t take their characters seriously. Mercutio and Paris are two characters that seem to only be able to either only say jokes or make themselves look like fools. The two main protagonist flawed way beyond belief. Romeo can’t keep a relationship and doesn't think twice before doing things. Juliet seems to be too young to be able to think out her decisions properly and tend to over exaggerate on multiple occasions. These three points make it so that instead of feeling bad for the characters you can’t help but laugh at
