1. What were the top most common protective factors, why do you think they were essential?
Protective Factors are resources that students exploit in order to achieve. The top five most common protective factors are dispositional: desire/willingness to class jump 94%, persistence 94%, sense of obligation to family 94%, high self-esteem 92 %, and internal locus of control 92%. These protective factors are essential because it gives students better personality traits to succeed. Also these protective factors are positive attributes that strengthen students. These may decrease the likelihood that individuals engage in crime activities. It also gives the student the desire to move ahead and excel academically.

“This includes familiarity of appropriate linguistic styles, cultural expectations, and concrete knowledge on how to be successful” (page 35). For example, Crystal joined a women’s mentoring program in high school sponsored by Wall Street firm so she could get benefits of being engaged with people in the world of business which resulted in a summer internship and a permanent position after graduation. Crystal was able to reach out to others and succeed. Also this is a valuable protective factor because “students put themselves in positions to ingratiate themselves to individuals who were in positions to provide them with unique and valuable access to tools of social ascension” (page 36). Also, a girl name Julie was engaged in student activities in college and was able to get close to the dean of students. She helped Julie get a graduate assistantship at a top university where Julie ended up pursuing her graduate degree. Without this protective factor students would not be able to overcome the odds that they had. The three significant themes regarding influential school personnel are:
1. The teachers made the students feel special.
2. The teachers were remembered as being particularly rigorous and demanding.
3. The teachers were significant beyond the classroom, that is why they made themselves available before and after school, and they played important roles in extra-curricular activities.
The three significant themes regarding influential school personnel are important because it has a positive impact on the students. When teachers make students feel special it creates a positive atmosphere in the classroom therefore, the students are more likely to learn and engage. It also motivates the students as if they have special talents and abilities. When teachers are considered hard or rigorous it creates a “sense of accomplishment” when students get good grades (page
