Never judge a book by its cover. As a child, I was told several times to never judge something by what that person, animal, or thing on how it may appear to be at first glance. I have used the wisdom of these words several times as I have grown and experienced more, but I have noticed that this saying is not used by all, especially when animals are the subject. I have identified this bias particularly when people encounter or even think about pit bulls. The fear that people have when they encounter a pit bull is very similar to what people often feel for motorcycle riders and what a biker might endure when they are faced with a person, or people who only believe that bikers are only capable of doing harm, like the stereotypical biker.

These statistics, however are skewed as the result of pit bulls being recognized by the less informed public as five separate breeds of dogs that look similar (Alvarado np.). Max Alvarado noted that these five breeds are frequently considered to be the: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, and Bull Terrier (Alvarado np.). Not only do the breed differences play a part in the unreliable statistics, but also the interbreeding between these five breeds and other breeds of dogs (Alvarado np.). Interbreeding between theses dogs makes the information unreliable due to the fact that when a dog who is only half or a fourth American Pit Bull Terrier counting that animal as a purebred dog if that dog were to attack someone causes pit bulls, which I will continue to refer to them as, to receive a bad rap (Alvarado np.). I have heard this many times and these words have helped me to look past the rough and ragged appearances that people often present. Though these words also ring true for pit bulls; as a result, we must begin to try and observe what lays beyond their mean and intimidating exterior to view the occasionally sweet and gentle interior that is hidden beneath the muscle and teeth. Yes, some dogs are not sweet and gentle, but we also must consider where they came from, how they were treated, and what their masters trained them to do and some of the masters that these dogs are stuck with are pure evil, yet some people still blame the dog for what someone else made them to be. These are the reasons why in the end, I chose to write about the many terrible variables that pit bulls must endure. Although pit bulls are not the only dogs to struggle through restrictions and over breeding, pit bulls are the dogs who will rarely be adopted owing to the fact of the rumors and misgivings that surround them. So all in all pit bulls are not mean and vicious dogs, but dogs who have grown up in terrible situations and followed their masters orders like dogs are supposed to
