Week Four Summary Response Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, entails the story of Odysseus and his long journey home after fighting in The Trojan war for ten years. It then takes him ten more years to reach his home in Ithaca where his wife and child have been fighting off suitors trying to steal Odysseus’ throne, King of Ithaca. His journey home begins when he escapes the clutches of the Calypso. Along the way, he faces many great obstacles and trials. Odysseus's greatest fault was his pride which first gets him in trouble at the beginning of the book. When he refuses to give credit to the Gods after defeating Troy, this angers the Gods which leads to his trip home being extended by almost 20 years. Hubris, another word for excessive self pride, is frequently a struggle that is faced by Odysseus when consulting the gods or any other threatening forces. Eventually Odysseus is able to overcome his hubris when he realizes that the gods are ultimately on his side after all. At this point he comes to the realization that the gods control his life; “It is no hard thing for the gods of heaven to glorify a man or bring him low" (Book XVI, 250-251). As one can see, Odysseus experiences a mental change in which he sees the world in different way than he did previously.
