What Are My Strengths And Weaknesses Essay

Improved Essays
A less comfortable path to explore is my weaknesses, yet I will press on. As silly as it may seem to an external eye, one of my major weaknesses in the first few weeks was that I doubted myself, the extent of my knowledge, and my ability to help my students. I felt somewhat out of place in my tutoring sessions considering the proximity in age and my lack of experience in tutoring reading comprehension and literacy skills. Within a few weeks, I realized that I had an academic knowledge base, coupled with a few years of college experience, that I could employ to communicate to my students the importance and reality of the work we do for their EN 103 class. I was able to use my experience as a student, previous and current, to understand how they felt and thought and then to validate their feelings through sharing my similar struggles in the relatable perspective of another student (MacDonald, 2000, p.12). Nevertheless, I still do worry about, and struggle with, the idea that I do not have enough content awareness to be a knowledgeable, effective educator. Another weakness or struggle I faced, at least with most of my students, was time management. I felt like I was letting my students down when we did not complete all of the tasks in our lesson plan for that day. Even when I tried to budget our time, use a stopwatch to keep track of the amount of time left, and refrain from adding extra detail to try to save time, there just never seemed to be enough time left. As the semester went on, I got better at utilizing our time effectively while maintaining the important information and discussions, but I still have a lot of room to improve. Discussing my strengths, believe it or not, is an equally difficult personal topic to discuss. Having students from two very different classes made me realize how flexible I can be for my students needs and the needs of other teachers. While one of the teachers I tutor for has a lesson plan for each day, the other teacher gave no specific lessons or topics for me to discuss. Therefore, for most of my students, I implemented another teacher’s plans and for the rest of my students, I created lessons to …show more content…
More than anything else, my experiences working with this group of amazing individuals will stay with me for the rest of my life. Years down my road, I will not remember which texts we read or how well my students explored and discussed their themes, but I will remember the day that I bonded with my student over our love for our nieces. I will remember the hilarious quotes and phrases my student brought to our meetings and how he liked to playfully complain when I assigned the remainder of the day’s task for homework. I will remember laughing with my student over the absurdity of American phrases that I had never given much thought before working with her, an English Language Learner. I will remember the excitement over a quiz review game and the knowledge that on that day I did make a difference in helping them learn. I will remember that glimpse of a smile on the face of my student who could barely meet my eyes during our sessions. I will remember the light in my student’s eyes when she finally understood the author’s meaning. I will also remember those who departed too soon, the emptiness of a journey

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

After reading a few chapters of Strengths Quest, I was instructed to participate in the Strengths Finder assessment (Anderson, Clifton, & Schreiner, 2006). This 30 minute assessment was an interesting tool that pointed out my greatest strengths. It also provided a detailed description of what having those strengths mean and examples of how they are prominent in a person 's life. After taking the StrengthsFinder survey, I discovered that my five dominant strengths are empathy, harmony, consistency, relator, and restorative.…

Houston, Texas; surrounded by sweaty strangers, stomach stuffed with roast beef sandwich, and I listened to the band Waters for the first time. April, resembling preceding months, had been miserable. But as I stood there listening to the song "Mom & Dads", the concert grew beyond just a fun time; it became an escape from the past year. Purchasing the band's CD became my heart's only desire and money was no object; I'd listen to that one song over and over as it became the soundtrack to regaining control of my life.…

Upon completing the StrengthsFinder survey, it is determined my 5 greatest strengths are the learner, achiever, competition, strategic, and relator, all of which I expected (Clifton, Anderson, & Schreiner, 2006). While reading the text I examined the various themes of different strengths, relating closely to the 5 assigned by the survey, I am impressed by how well the explanations were written in the book, Strengths Quest Second Edition. The text in correlation with the materials provided from the StrengthsFinder survey brought forth meaning and depth into finding out exactly the type of person I am. Learning is listed as my top strength in the survey (Clifton, Anderson, & Schreiner, 2006). I believe I have used that trait extensively throughout…

I thought the Survey of Character Strengths was an interesting survey to take. My first and second strengths were not particularly surprising to me, however my third was not what I necessarily expected it to be, but I am certainly not unhappy with it. All three strengths are values I have always admired because I have grown up watching my parents and older siblings showcase all three. I have consciously tried to emulate their example regarding these strengths and it was intriguing and encouraging to see all three show up in the survey. I was glad to see which strength showed up as my top, as kindness and generosity are especially important to me.…
