When King died, at that moment, the country was not ready to end segregation in the US, and the country may never be, but because of King, the country has made major strides to one day end discrimination and segregation. The night before he was assassinated, he spoke to the people of Memphis, Tennessee, telling them to show resistance toward people who tell them that they do not belong in society. This speech was later named, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”, which fits perfectly to his life because he said in his speech, “Well I do not know what will happen now, we have some dark days ahead. But it don’t matter with me now, because i’ve been to the mountaintop.” The only people who helped him get to where he was were the people who were at the rallies and the followers. In his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, he talks about how he almost dies at a book signing when a woman stabbed him in the chest when he was signing her book. The New York Times the next day published a story about that instance, and said that he got stabbed in the chest, and if the blade would have punctured his aorta, which is the major artery in the human body. “If he would have sneezed, he would have died”(NY Times). A couple days after he had surgeries on the wound, he received mail from a ninth grade student who mentions that she is white, and says that she was happy that King did not sneeze. The point of this story is that he reached to people that he did not try to reach to but changed their lives for the better. That was one of my goals for this year’s election, I wanted to reach to people that I have never met and may never meet, but I want to change their lives for the better. I want to make so many changes for the betterness of the school and community, but I am going to need the help of everyone around me to get that done. Because I have been to the mountaintop, I have seen the promise land, I may not get there with you, but just know in your hearts that
