Louis Armstrong's early life. Louis Armstrong was born on August fourth 1901 in the storyville section of New Orleans, Louisiana. Louis Armstrong grew up listening to a style of jazz called dixieland. During his teen years louis shoveled coal in the day and played at local sassoon's at night with his band.
