What are genetically modified organisms? Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. Throughout the United States, the majority of the crops have been totally modified with genetic engineering. Lots of food we eat today is now genetically modified, and we do not really know if what we are eating is natural or non-natural. This has made a great impact in American agricultural world, and it has increased the amount of Americans that do not want this type of food on their tables. It is time to abolish genetically modified organisms in the United States.
First of all, the corruption of these modified organisms. Big companies such as Monsanto, the biotechnology corporation that provides 90% of the genetically engineered seeds used in the US market, have been telling lies about the food they produce, and how its company works. GM crops have been disastrous for farmers in the United States. A new report by Britain’s Soil Association shows that over the last three years, GM crops have cost the American taxpayers over $12 billion (in farm subsidies). Also small farmers are pushed out of business. According to seattleorganicrestaurants.org, more and more small farmers are pushed out of business by greedy corporations like Monsanto.
