The poem “Still I Rise” is about the African-American author who lived through some awful times of inequality. She wrote this poem about how she would rise above society's viewpoint on her. Maya Angelou’s tone of this poem was defiant. She was proud to be an African-American and wasn't going to let the color of her skin stop her from succeeding. The author used different types of figurative language including simile, personification, metaphor, and repetition. An example of simile being used in the poem is “Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room.” An example of personification is “ You may cut me with your eyes.” An example of a metaphor is “I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.”

For example, Sharon Olds uses various similes to describe her night. She states, “Love? It was more like dragonflies in the sun, 100 degrees at noon, the ends of their abdomens stuck together, I close my eyes when I remember.” She uses a simile to compare her sexual experience to dragonflies mating. It seems, like, a weird comparison, but it fits the poem perfectly.…

One example of imagery from the song is when the speaker says, “Though it's been a while now, I can still feel so much pain like a knife that cuts you the wound heals, but the scar, that scar remains” (Poison). Here, the speaker uses a simile as a literary tool to help emphasize the way the speaker is feeling at that moment. He is trying to help those listening understand just how much he is hurting from his last relationship, he is painting a picture for them with his words. Another time the speaker uses imagery is when he states, “Though I tried not to hurt you, though I tried. But I guess that's why they say every rose has its thorn” (Poison).…

One example is when the author says (about Eleanor), “Wearing the face she keeps in a jar by the door.” This is an example of a metaphor because Eleanor doesn’t really keep a certain face in a jar by the door. The author is trying to say that Eleanor has different “faces” or personalities she wears around different people or settings. Another example of figurative language is, “Died in the church and was buried along with her name. This is another metaphor, the author is saying that Eleanor had no family and no siblings to carry on the family name so it was “buried” or lost when Eleanor passed away.…

It all began at the base of that hill. There I stood, unabashed by the ever-tensening knot in the bottom of my stomach. In the Alps, there was no freedom from shivering.…

Metaphor is a comparison not using like or as. The Three metaphors that I find interesting and that strengthen the poem all come from one poem, “Metaphors” by Sylvia Plath. The entire poem is riddle with nine metaphors as the hints. Without one of the metaphors a reader might miss a clue that is important to the riddle. The three that I find interesting are “a melon strolling on two tendrils” (3), which I took to mean her melon shaped stomach on skinny vine like legs.…

) In class we went over the transcendentalist movement which in turn, led to learning about the different tenets of transcendentalism. We also learned that the tenants, although used in different context necessarily have one meaning. I decided to analyze Still I Rise by Maya Angelou which has a specific tenant of transcendentalism, self-reliance. Which I then compared it to stanza 1 and 52 in Song of Myself by Walt Whitman which is also a poem.…

A song is simply a poem that is spoken with harmony, so the depth and poetic characteristics of a poem are still represented in a song, and sometimes even better. Although these two pieces of art are known to be separate works, the main structure of each is similar. The controversy between which is better is still being debated today. A magazine article says, “But is his work literature? Yes, absolutely, and literature is what the Nobel Prize is for”, which is describing a songwriter who out did the means of poetry internationally (Teicher).…

Figurative language is the use of words in a non-literal sense. One example of figurative language is simile; a simile is a comparison of two unlike things using like or as to give an added meaning to one of them. The next quote has one form of simile. “In his blue gardens, men and women came and went like moths among the whispering and the champagne and the stars” (39). In this simile Fitzgerald uses like to compare the men and women to the moths that float through the garden at night at Gatsby’s party.…

In the poems “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes and “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou both authors convey the same message which is overcoming hardships in life. In the two poems they show their similarities through repetition which will be shown in the first paragraph and literary devices such as figurative language, metaphors and similes, while also showing their differences through parallel structure of both the poems, and through rhetorical questions. Hughes and Angelou show their similarities through repetition which helps the reader grasp the key concept of both poems which is to overcome obstacles. In “Mother to Son” it repeats “Life for me ain’t no crystal stair” (Hughes 2). Meaning that life has not treated the narrator of the…

Imagery is dominant in this poem, especially after Maya questions her oppressors. Most of the imagery is conveyed through similes and metaphors, and gives the readers a clear view on what Maya is trying to get across. The use of figurative language gives the readers a clear picture of what Maya means and usually conveys a strong emotion. When Maya says “Shoulders falling down like teardrops” we can get an image of drooping shoulders (like the shape of a tear) and the tear itself is associated with sadness. I found one particular stanza quite amusing; Maya asks questions that are aimed at the ‘white’ people.…
