Reflection: Multiple Methods Of Aural Learning

People learn in a variety of ways. Some may learn by touching or moving, and others may learn by watching videos or looking at charts. Others are multimodal, where they learn best through multiple methods, such as visual and aural. People have different strategies to help them understand and remember information. These tend to be grouped into the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic categories. I rely on several strategies to help me learn. First, I always make flashcards after reading chapters from books or after lectures. Even if I do not have time to study from them, simply writing out the definitions, dates, or names helps me to remember them. I use different colored cards for different chapters and subjects. For example, my occupational therapy flashcards are green and my psychology flashcards are white. I study from flashcards by having a friend hold them up to quiz me, or going through them one by one by myself. Second, I read from textbooks out loud. Hearing the information along with seeing it helps me retain it more. When I read silently for too long, I lose track of what I am actually reading. My results show that I am strongest at aural learning. They also show that I am a strong read/write and kinesthetic leaner. My weakest learning style is visual. I agree with these scores in that I prefer to get notes from an oral lecture, rather than from a PowerPoint. However, according to the checklist from the Academic Skills Resource Manual, most of my learning strategies correspond to the visual learning style. I take a lot of notes and make a lot of flashcards, but I also like talking out loud while I work to ensure that I am understanding the material. I strongly agree with the VARK questionnaire, though, that I am a multimodal
