Channel Ten, one of the three main commercial television networks in Australia, is currently facing many issues due to a lack of ratings, and programing not resonating with viewers. Channel Ten showed significant dominance in the industry during the early 2000s, having programing that was unique from all the other networks such as Australian Idol, and shows imported from the US that were extremely well targeted to younger demographics. However, in recent years the network has struggled to keep pace as the rise has seen a rise content that once made them unique, being available online at any time, and other networks adopting similar strategies.
Many have cited recent management changes as the beginning of Channel Ten’s downfall, as profits have been downhill since three years ago when James Packer, Lachlan Murdoch and Gina Rinehart bought into the network gained control of the board. While at first this does not seem like a huge ethical issue, there has been a suggestion by Laurence Freedman, the Former Channel Ten director and co-owner of a buy out from Fox News, owned by Murdoch, “If you had a merger with another global network, which will remain nameless, they could change it to a network with a political agenda.” (9th April 2014). It is important that a business does not try to influence political decisions of its consumers, when its sole purpose is to entertain.
If Fox News was to overtake the network they which could easily influence the decisions of consumers, as they do in the United States, and create news and programming that is not fair and balanced.
