1. What are the facts? The facts of this scenario are as followed. Buffy is a student who is enrolled in a Distance Learning sociology course. She is a single mother who works full time at a hospital to provide for her five-year-old twin sons. A term paper that Buffy needs to pass in order to not fail her sociology course is due in two days. The instructor of the course, Professor Snidely, has made it clear that there will be a zero tolerance for cheating or plagiarizing. Jim Bob, who is a close friend to Buffy, told her that he would re-word his paper so that she could turn it in as her own. The two students don’t believe that Professor Snidely will check the paper that closely, they are confident that they will get away with it.

What are Jim Bob’s options? What values must Jim Bob weigh in considering his options? Jim Bob’s options in the situation affect him and Buffy. He has offered to help Buffy by re-writing his paper in a way that she could take credit for it. This shows that he lacks moral values for cheating or “helping”. Jim Bob can choose to do this favor for his friend or he can choose to back out and make Buffy do it herself. Jim Bob may value his education, which he would be putting at risk when he takes the chance of getting caught and getting himself as well as Buffy into trouble. He may also value his friendship and not want to damage it by not helping Buffy out. Jim Bob must decide if his friendship is more important than his education.
4. What are the possible consequences of each of Buffy’s options for (1) herself, (2) Jim Bob, and (3) Professor Snidely? Buffy’s decision out of her two options, may come with consequences for (1) herself. If she decides to cheat she will risk getting into trouble, hurting her education, or even getting her friend in trouble. If Buffy decides to write her own paper she will be getting she grade she deserves for her own work, which may be better than sheexpects. She also eliminates guilt or regret for cheating and putting herself as well as her friend at

He could get caught cheating and get dropped from his class, a poor grade, or worse. Jim Bob could also be creating an opportunity for a pattern of him taking on not only his work, but Buffy’s work as well. Jim Bob could also be putting his friendship at risk if he decides not to help Buffy.
The decision made will ultimately effect (3) Professor Snidely. The professor will have to analyze both papers and determine if cheating was involved, then have to determine consequences to Buffy, Jim Bob, or even both. This puts extra work and stress on Professor Snidely, which can be avoided by Buffy doing her own work.
5. Given the possible consequences for herself and others, what should Buffy do? Buffy should find the time to write the best possible paper she can in order to achieve a passing grade. Buffy would eliminate problems for both her friend and professor. She will have to find time in her busy schedule to study and create an efficient paper that she will be proud of because it is her own hard work. The best choice in a scenario like this is to eliminate the problem to the person responsible, Buffy, and to have the student put their best effort into the class in order to further enrich

This was later publish in the 1998 edition of Fresh Ink, which is a compilation of work done by students enrolled in Boston College's first-year writing course. The story is told from the perspective of the author and her experiences through school. This essay is a memory of Wenke's high school student life and an observation of how cheating has increased. She argues that over that past decade there has been a rise in cheating in both college and high school, because of the stresses put on students to get good grades, so that they can be enrolled into a competitive college and acquire a high paying job as an adult.…

In “The Plagiarism Plague,” Raymond A. Schroth argues that students who plagiarize their assignments are more likely to be unsuccessful in the future. Schroth claims that when studies interfere in students’ priorities or personal life, they use plagiarism as a tool to pass their course with no hard work. In fact, student plagiarize someone else’s assignments or thoughts as their own, by incorporating it into their own work without full affirmation. Therefore, evidence shows that untruthfulness to their teachers in its various forms is spreading like a virus. Schroth also states that students like Joe Hotz plagiarize because they do not value the level of education they are being offered.…

An intellectual is defined as a person who places a high value on or pursues things of interest to the intellect or the more complex forms and fields of knowledge. This definition of an intellectual has been restricted by an educational system to mean indoctrinate students into what the system believes to be “academic”. Gerald Graff’s essay “Hidden Intellectualism” argues that there is knowledge and intelligence beyond what the traditional education system is practicing. Graff contends that incorporating the interests of students into the lesson will help students think more effectively and logically. “Intellectualism” is seen by how well a student does in traditional subjects.…

Cheating and plagiarizing hurts the student more than it helps, but with a lack of interest and desire to do well, the student may disregard that possibility. Some students may do even better in an environment where cheating is less common because of an honor code, as represented in Alyssa Vangelli’s article. It makes sense that she has criticisms about a new honor code because not everyone will agree, but once it gets revised and makes students want to prevent cheating, students will end up doing better in school. A less excessive amount of writing a code and consequences and more focused on increasing the moral values of maintaining integrity will aid the success rate of students. Additionally, an increased moral value against cheating and a belief in themselves, students will be more encouraged to reduce the amount of cheating that occurs in school.…

Bernard Williams’s example of the moral dilemma involving Jim killing the one individual to save 19 is an interesting one that provokes much thought and it is a decision that utilitarian followers would find quite easy. Utilitarian’s subscribe to the view that everything that you do or do not do should be for the sake of maximizing total happiness, or utility. But individuals who subscribe to a different moral philosophy could potentially have a myriad of ethical concerns associated with making such a decision. In this paper, I will explain the moral dilemma that is presented in Bernard Williams’s piece, hypothesize what the utilitarian would do in that situation, why they would choose to do that. I will also demonstrate why Williams’s dilemma provides valid evidence to reject utilitarianism on the grounds that it weakens a person’s integrity, sense of responsibility, and their moral character.…
