In 1963, the US NASA team traveled to Mercury for their third mission trip; however, it was also the mission trip where the first U.S astronaut ate on space. John Glenn consumed applesauce from an aluminum tube . These tubes are very similar to toothpaste and astronauts would squeeze out the food paste and swallow it. Some of the food items would be applesauce, liquefied chocolate, pureed beef, or vegetable mixture . Tube food was a very common way of eating during the 1940s. American Can Company in the late 1940s invited this type of eating for fightering pilots who could not take their gloves off, while flying . Tubes prevented any kind of contamination to occur. However these tubes prevented astronauts from seeing or tasting their foods. …show more content…
Crumbs can be very dangerous because crumbs can clog up air vents or block instruments in the shuttle. Also during this time, there was the invention of the bite size cubes as another food option. Bite size cubes were high-calorie mixture of protein, high melting point fat, sugar, fruits and nuts . These cubes allowed some astronauts to taste their food but it was definitely not popular. As a result, many astronauts lose weight and became ill quickly .
