What Are Benedict Arnold's Mistakes

Benedict Arnold V was born in the year of 1741 on the 14th of January in Norwich, Connecticut. His mom, Hannah Arnold was a wealthy women and married his dad, Benedict Arnold III a successful merchant and sea captain. Benedict had five brothers and sisters, but only one lived to be an adult. Benedict Arnold V went to a private school until the age of 13, because of his dad’s mistakes. His dad made some bad business deals, which caused him to start drinking a lot and then their money started to deplenish. He was forced to practice being a apothecary. Benedict Arnold V didn't think things through and was a daredevil, so in 1757, when he was 16 years old he enlisted to fight in the French and Indian War. He was accused by his enemies that he had poor behavior in the march through Maine. Arnold also got accused of incompetence on Lake Champlain. On February of 1777, Congress promoted five other brigadier generals all below Arnold in rank to the rank of major general ( a rank above Arnold Benedict’s rank). E.W.B. states that, “only Washington's pleas kept Arnold from resigning from the army.” He saw an opportunity to get promoted when he heard of a British attack on American supply stations in Danbury, Connecticut. He gathered a local militia and rushed to stop the British, although when he got there it was too late to stop the destruction of the supplies, he did manage to make the British flee. The Congress appreciated what he had done and on May 2nd he got promoted to major general, but Arnold was still below the other five that got promoted in rank. Benedict was charged of stealing property and goods from Montreal merchants, when the Canadian campaign was happening. He was later cleared of the charge, but he was so mad that he decided to resign from the army on July 1777. Washington pleaded with Benedict to rejoin the army, because he …show more content…
Congress then rewarded him with the rank that we had been wanting, one rank above the five other major generals. His first wife Margaret died back in 1775. According to the book Benedict Arnold written by Mary Dodson Wade “on April 8, 1779, in a quiet evening ceremony in her house, the thirty-nine-year-old general exchanged vows with his beautiful bride” Peggy Shippen. With his new wife Peggy, Arnold spent money rapidly and soon found himself in dept . He was also being charged of a numerous amount of things which were all related to using his military office for self gains, at the same time. Arnold Benedict requested for a trail in Congress in May 1779, because he didn’t think it was fair. The verdict of the trail found him not guilty for most of the charges and told Washington to reprimand him, Washington did it for him in April 1780. E.W.B. also states that “by this time Arnold had already started on the road to treason”, which was the reason why me became so notable.
