“What an ignorant society thinks freedom is”, a satirical cartoon created by a UK based illustrator and cartoonist Steve Cutts. Steve Cutts powerfully presented his perspective on the harsh, brutal and disgusting reality of modern western society in which individuals are shown to be self-indulgent consumers of technology, artificial foods and drugs. The cartoon displays a repulsive example of what ignorant people believe freedom is, namely that the decisions we make about the way we live and what we consume has a negative impact on the quality of our lives. Numerous and various visual elements, language features and literary devices have been used to position the viewers and pose questions in relating to ways in which we choose to live our lives. According to Steve Cutts, the bulky, couch-like figure symbolises the “ignorant society”.

This man isn’t the only chunky couch-like figure, as shown in the picture on the wall there are other couch-like figures too which just further shows how manipulated and brainwashed western modern society really is.
