My teamwork continued during my Bachelor of Dental Surgery program through mobile clinics and organized camps in unserved areas during my free time. For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

The ICU ward was filled with a sense of isolation and coldness. On my first day there, I met Manny, a 7-year old Hmong immigrant who was recovering from brain surgery. His mother sat beside him in tears at the sight of her son’s head wrapped in medical dressing and his mouth intubated. I stood quietly in the corner observing the physician on call, Dr. Gajula, attempting to explain post-operation difficulties the patient would endure. Medical jargon poured out of Dr. Gajula’s mouth only to be received by a confused and apprehensive mother.…

This common goal is to give the best and most accurate service to the patient at the clinic, the same goal was shared during my time at FSA. These teamwork experiences have also taught me to provide, accept and use feedback from the members of my group, and to always adapt, improve and develop new skills. Through these three activities, I was able to reinforce my reliability and resilience. Pursuit of Happiness Unlike most of my colleagues, I have spent an extra year pursuing a DDS-MPH dual degree program to further my interest in the underserved population, a pursuit that has enhanced my understanding of the complex relationship between health, oral health, and the human condition. In an effort to better understand the social determinants of oral health, I have worked closely with some of the nation’s most vulnerable populations – minority older adults. Specifically, I worked on a research project that used Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methods to assess the relationship between oral health and nutrition among vulnerable seniors who receive home-delivered meals in New York City.…

Growing up, my five siblings and I would rush straight to the candy aisles during our weekly grocery outings. Kit Kats, Reese’s, Warheads, and bubble gum were essential sweets that never seemed to last more than a day in our household. My parents found sugar-laden confectionaries as a gateway to keep my siblings and I preoccupied, but this translated to many cavities. Up until the age of fourteen, I had stainless steel crowns on my lower left first premolar tooth and all four of my canine teeth. I dreaded talking, and I dreaded taking pictures.…

“Ok tilt a little towards me, and open just a bit wider,” I heard my father say to his patient as I peered behind the corner of the operating room. To the soft hum of a high-speed drill, I scanned the room looking at X-Rays depicting luminescent teeth, and watched as the assistant handed my dad instruments repeatedly like a well-oiled machine. When I was five, this antic was cute to the patients sitting in the dental chair and my father as well. As my age increased, my cuteness declined, however, my intrigue did not.…
