Reaction on What a Star What a Jerk
Being a manager is not an easy job. You have to manage the employee’s expectations, lead by example and find effective solutions for any problem that arises under your area of control. The article “What a star-What a Jerk” illustrates an interesting, yet a challenging problem that might be faced by managers. The manager, Jane, is going through a hard time dealing with a top performer and a star of the team, yet a passive and an immoral employee, Andy. The problem is that she cannot get rid of him, as he is the “rainmaker” on the team and the best performer between them, but at the same time, she cannot tolerate his abusiveness and bullying to the team …show more content…
Firstly, I believe that Jane’s main problem is not Andy’s behavior, but herself. She is not taking this issue as serious as she should, and she is not being fair to the team, including Andy himself. According to research, the impact of negative interactions is five times greater than the impact of positives ones (“How to deal with unacceptable employee behavior,” n.d.). Andy’s excellent performance has been stopping Jane from taking businesslike actions to stop his attitude. The fact that he is a star does not have to do with him being disrespectful to others, which will result in lowering productivity and crippling the morale of the whole team in the long run. I once worked as a trainee with a team on writing financial reports for one of the company’s new divisions to measure its performance each week. One of the team members, called Marya, never seemed to like what we were doing. Instead of working with us on the task, she just gave us negative comments about our work, in the most ineffective way possible. Since I was a trainee, she always underestimated me. This affected my performance as well as my self-esteem, and it created a negative atmosphere among the team …show more content…
