Whaling Persuasive Essay

While I don't personally love the practice of hunting whales, I think Norway and Japan should have the right to hunt non-endangered whales provided they do so in an ethical and sustainable manner. Whaling has been a part of Norwegian culture since the 9th century and part of Japanese culture since the 12th century (Japan Whaling Association, 2002). I think an important part of achieving a global community is understanding and working with the cultures involved. Perhaps future generations in Japan and Norway will adopt views on whaling that are more in-line with international views. If that happens, whaling may decline or end.

I think another thing to take into consideration is that those who harvest wild animals are not necessarily cruel to the animals. I grew up in an area where the local culture hunted for deer every fall; this is pretty common in most areas I've lived in. In my experience, the people who hunt animals like deer strive to kill the animal in a manner that is as instant and painless as possible. They also have a great respect for the animal and the resources it provides. While there are hunters who hunt for the sake of putting a stuffed head on their mantle, almost all people I

I think that cultural exemptions should look at whether the normally prohibited practice violates the rights of the nation's citizens or causes a negative ecological effect that will impact other nations, such as hunting an animal into extinction.

I think that a panel to examine issues such as whaling is ultimately a good idea. However, I would imagine that there could be some resistance from the local culture if the panel is made up of people who don't share their cultural values. I think that a council on whaling should look at the ecological effects of whaling ultimately. They should also weigh in how a ban would effect local economies that rely on whaling and the history of whaling in these

In a world where views on morality vary throughout every religion and through every person in the world. I believe that killing for sport is perfectly fine, it is one’s hobby and everyone has hobbies they love. These hobbies vary from knitting to playing video games all the way to snowboarding. When it is specifically looked at in an individualistic many questions raise from down under and groups of all sorts start to fight. PETA will protect any animal for the right to live and they say that killing animals for sport is wrong.…

Canadian Seal Hunt The famous Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai once said “Environment and the economy are really both two sides of the same coin. If we cannot sustain our environment, we can not sustain ourselves” This has led me to the belief that the Canadian Seal hunt should not be banned because of the environmental benefits, economical benefits and the health benefits it provides that have been discovered through well developed research. Firstly, the seal hunt is balancing out the ecosystem. Research shows that seals in Newfoundland and Labrador are consuming 250, 000 MT of Turbot, 800, 000 MT of capelin and…

Whaling has been a Native American tradition for over 2,000 years, incidentally the International Whaling Commission and many other nongovernmental organizations are trying to change that tradition. These types of organizations such as Greenpeace, IWC, and NAMMCO, entail transnationalist views. Whereas on the other hand, states like Japan, Norway, and Iceland, have nationalist perceptions. The transnationalist argument against whaling mainly deals with animal rights and also the impact on the environment of losing a species. The nationalist’s argument on the other hand, involves experimentation intentions and tradition in cultures, and supporting some economies.…

In this study I want to tag Biggs killer whales (Orcinus orca), also known as mammal eating or transient killer whales, in the mid-Salish sea. Biggs killer whales are named after Michael Bigg, a Canadian marine biologist who is considered the founder of killer whale research (Paterson, 2002). Bigg was the first scientist to look at the differences between killer whales that preyed on fish and stayed in one home range all year and those that preyed on mammals and live in larger unknown ranges. It is believed these two ecotypes diverged roughly 700,000 years ago which helps explain the differences in life history strategies (Hildering, 2013). Biggs would go on to discover the distinct cultures that exist in killer whales as well as how to identify…

Imagine a world where there is no rare or unique animals, rapidly declining food numbers, and countries brought to poverty due to animal extinction. Well, thankfully, there is no need to worry about that reality, due to big game trophy hunting. Big game trophy hunting should be allowed because it keeps animal populations at a reasonable level, it provides nourishment to the populous, and it enriches Africa’s economy.. Initially, big game trophy hunting should be allowed because it controls the animal population.…

Overabundance and how can it affect the surrounding ecosystem When discussing hunting and the types of impacts that removal of a population can do to ecosystems it 's important to know why the hunting is necessary to control negative and potentially devastating impacts that are a result of the animals in question. The Science of Overabundance points to a specific issues that surround the reseeding of Eastern Hemlock in the Upper Great Lakes region of the United States. “Hemlock was a dominant or important canopy component in approximately two-thirds of Wisconsin’s northern forest area at the time of European colonization but was reduced by timber harvest and bark extraction to remnant stands covering only .05 percent of the landscape” (McShea,…

I agree on the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption. This is once again, dominant cultures forcing their "morals" on inferior cultures. I honestly feel like this is a new form of colonialism. As the great Christian philosopher so beautifully put, "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.…

Why should whaling be banned and illegal? So they had to be careful not to have anything happen to it in transport. They go arrested a few times for trying to stop the capture of live whales for displays in zoos and sea world. They also go held hostage in the USSR when they tried to stop a factory whale operation just across from Alaska. This was all caught on film and left in the small raft they were boarding the land with and somehow the small boat footed back to the larger cruzer and then they had the film and made a run for internal waters. As the water became more and more over fished the national waling ordination started putting limits on different species and where you could and couldn’t fish finally in the 90’s whaling was not allowed anywhere.…

It’s counterintuitive, but banning the practice would mean the systematic slaughter of wildlife, trampling of unique ecosystems, and possible extinction of rare species. Sacrificing a quota of lions to hunters keep many other alive(Anderson and Downey).Basically, pro-hunters, believe that it is good for the ecosystem to kill these certain animals such as lions or elephants. They believe that killing these animals is ethical because it is maintaining the populations for other species that these predators might eat. But if they are killing off these predators then the other species will just end up over populating…

Trophy hunting has been around for many years. The issue with trophy hunting has been an ongoing argument on whether they should ban the “sport” or if they should leave it the way it is. Trophy hunting should be illegal because it is morally wrong, wasteful, and kills off endangered species. It is morally wrong because they are killing these animals for the sport of it. Trophy hunting is wasteful because they don’t use the entire animal's body.…

Whaling has been a controversial activity for some years now. Whales in today’s society have been regarded as “gentle giants” and highly intelligent animals, which is true. Some nations however, such as the Norwegian and Japanese have whaling deeply rooted in their culture and history. For many centuries, their ancestors took part in whaling as a means to sustain their life, livelihood and culture. I agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption, given that the hunting of the whales is regulated to prevent over-hunting so that the whale population can replenish.…
