Whale Rider Identity

Culture cannot be maintained unless it is challenged by potential leaders, who often times reveal the true identity of themselves and their community. The movie “Whale Rider” directed by Niki Caro distinctly showed the contrast between traditional expectations and the modernised community. From the beginning of the Film, Koro had high expectations of the men only and saw great potential in them, in contrast to this, he did not acknowledge or notice the role of the women. Although Pai’s actions constantly foreshadowed that she had the qualities of a true leader, Paka chose to reject this due to him being strongly influenced by traditions. It is obvious in Pai’s speech that the denial of paka had affected her emotionally. The extreme close ups of Pai showed her state of vulnerability through the tears as she tried to overcome her emotions to challenge her traditions. …show more content…
She clearly suggested that leaders shouldn't be connected with only males but whoever has the knowledge and qualities of a leader. Her observant personality that tackled the community’s challenges allowed her to shape her identity as it displays characteristics of respect and care towards her family and community. The light contrast between Pai having a bright light and the audience having a dim light, depicts Pai’s identity as strong even in the times of sadness. In addition, a low angle was used to show that the audience were looking up to Pai as she said her speech, revealing her superiority and power she had within the community. To conclude, Pai’s determination to challenge the traditions with positive intentions proved that she is the true leader capable to unite the community
