In the song “Heartless”, Kanye uses a slow, sentimental beat while carrying on an auto tune sound that would be very uplifting. A slow heartbeat-like beat in the background, after the first few seconds a fast paced piano comes in. The rapping starts to pick up its pace and the lyrics get sadder. Kanye Wests Heartless has been considered a masterpiece, and in my opinion it has been. Various artists had rarely used the auto-tuned sound, and Kanye brings it back with recent album “The College Dropout” and more in “808’s and Heartbreak”.…
This dark and aggressive song, by Big Pun, promotes the idea of revenge, retribution and ruthlessness. It includes endless lines of pure violence and harsh messages written in breathtaking poetry, that is powerful enough to completely possess an individual’s attention. Big Pun is without a doubt lyrically gifted, but the morals and ethics he is advocating are troublesome for modern society. He describes murder as something he is born to do, essentially spreading the idea that he is good at it and proud. In addition to this, he raps about emotions of remorse being a negative thing, teaching people that “feeling bad” for others is not a desirable attitude.…
Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers - The double negative in the title (and repeated throughout) completely changes the song. Colloquial slang notwithstanding, technically he's saying there IS sunshine when she's gone. Which is probably true in a literal sense, unless she dumped him during the winter in…
Who are you? Could you answer that in one paragraph? One poem? One song? The identity of an individual can be immensely diverse.…
Joy Harjo Poetry is an awesome and beautiful way for many people to express their feelings. There are many types of poetry and some convey deep thoughts, while some others are more lighthearted. Native American poetry reflects the feelings, the emotions, and the warmth of the poet but also, the way of life of the Native American tribes, and what they felt and dealt with during the fight for their land and way of life. Joy Harjo is one of the best known Native American poets and according to her words “The literature of the aboriginal people of North America defines America. It is not exotic.…
Loving, and old friend; [W]e have built seven dwelling houses . . . and have made preparation for divers others. We set the last spring some twenty acres of Indian corn, and sowed some six acres of barley and peas, and according to the manner of Indians, we manured our ground with herrings . . . which we have in great abundance . . . Our corn did prove well, and God be praised, we had a good increase of Indian corn . . .…

Good morning/afternoon Mrs Vassilieff and fellow peers. In this short presentation I will be presenting three original poems concerning the social issue of racism. In the modern world racism is becoming more and more destructive. It disempowers people and destroys the cohesion in the community. I will be deconstructing the three poems using the STEPUP process and identifying and explaining the use of figurative techniques in each poem.…
Shane Koyczan is an author, performer, and poet. “To This Day…” is a spoken-word poem for the “bullied and the beautiful”. His poem explores the anguish of any individual who has grown up in an environment that made him/her feel different, alone, and so forth. It is a powerful story, meant to speak to those who have survived the wraths of bullying. In order to bring a visual aspect to his piece, Koyczan sent invites to various artists from around the globe to contribute 20-second segments of animation that would benefit his project.…
The poem “Her Kind” by Anne Sexton and “For My Daughter” by Weldon Kees share similar concepts of gender inequality, but in very different ways. Sexton’s poem is written from a woman’s point of view, while Kees’s is from the male perspective. Written by the opposite gender, and only twenty years apart, both poems share the same outlook on gender inequality: women are less superior to men. Sexton uses the symbol of a witch to portray the view that women hold offensive power, and Kees’s fake daughter expresses that girls are inferior to men.…

The true Native American culture died long ago, leaving only the aspects that white people can embrace in order to deny that they forced the death and assimilation of Native Americans. Native American culture has become lifeless culture losing everything but what the dominant culture deems to be profitable. The binding classification of being a Native American in a society where Native American culture is devalued and made into costumes forces the modern Native American to play a part in America’s romanticized Indian culture festival or to blend in with the crowd. As seen in “The Real Indian Leans Against” and “A New Story”, Native American culture has not survived because whites deem it worthless, forcing its members into assimilation and submission.…

In the poems “On the Pulse of Morning” by Maya Angelou, and “One Today” by Richard Blanco the poet's touch on the challenges facing the American people. Angelou speaks about the challenge we have as Americans to set aside our differences and accept each other, and the different cultures we have. Richard Blanco talks about how everyone is the same no matter how different we look on the outside. These are challenges we need to overcome as a nation.…
Most of today’s society has had an experience like the character in Carolyn Kizer’s poem “Bitch”, by meeting an ex-significant lover/partner when visiting a local place. The awkward first moment while making eye contact with one another just like a past experience, often creates a challenge about the appropriate way to act. Especially, if the past experiences was not pleasant and/or was full of male dominance. Carolyn Kizer shows this in her poem through the theme, which is, you should never chase after something that was never really yours to begin with and is more harmful than rewarding. Beginning with the title, “Bitch”, most readers will associate this word to have two possible meanings.…
