During the early 19th century, the Louisiana Purchase was made between Napoleon and President Thomas Jefferson. The Louisiana Purchase, was a land purchase for fifteen million dollars, that doubled the size of America. Due to Americans lacking knowledge of the land, President Jefferson, sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on an expedition to explore the territory, better known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The foundings made of the land by the explorers encouraged people to travel west. Many people were willing to make the long journeys because they heard of the mesmerizing tales, of the divine land that awaited them there. Pioneers, merchants, manufacturers, and many other people headed to the west for many reasons. One reason that motivated people to go west, was many people saw the region of land west of Americans, as a great chance to make money. To elaborate, people called land speculators bought huge areas of land, hoping one day it would increase in value. Due to this, they made great profits by selling their land to the thousands of settlers who dreamed of owning their own farms. Other people who hoped to make money off of traveling west, were manufacturers and merchants. These people hoped to make money by selling and making items that farmers needed. Many others were motivated to head west to escape people they owed or to find jobs. Another reason that motivated pioneers to head west was, many people, along with President Thomas Jefferson, believed the key to the nation’s health was land ownership.
