During the 1800s, the federal government promoted westward expansion in a variety of ways. Expansion was encouraged by manifest destiny--the belief that the U.S was destined to expand westward. Families moved west after the addition of new territories, Native Americans were removed from their lands, and transportation boomed. This expansion changed the shape and character of the country.
After the War of 1812, the government no longer had to worry about foreign affairs and focused on expanding the country westward.
