After the Civil War, people migrated west giving up all that they had for many different reasons, and to do many different things; one reason in particular was to gain a better life. The Civil War caused economic problems in the south, for this reason people migrated west to gain economically. Moving west meant better job opportunities, land ownership, and agriculture.
Different groups of people picked up and moved west and in doing so, they encountered major barriers. Western migrants and the Native Americans were in disagreement with each other and often fought over land, which led to a takeover. Once the land was seized and the Native American went to live on reservations the settlers discovered gold.
It is my opinion that the treatment of the Native Americans was selfish and unfair. The Native Americans were victimized by settlers. I believe that the government should have honored the promise made by Lewis Cass, U.S. Secretary of War in the early 1800's, that the Native Americans would not loss their land.
The second half of the nineteenth century
In the second half of the nineteenth century, millions of people move to the urban environment. Rural life had become unsuitable due to the depletion of the environment. In order to protect the land, people decided to move to the city.
People looking to improve their way of life moved from the farms to the city. This move created overcrowding, poverty, and unhealthy conditions. People of a higher economic status moved, while people of a lower economic status stayed in the city.
Napoleon III believed that rebuilding was the solution. He thought to provide employment, improve living conditions, and give power to his empire.
