The countries that the US annexed were in deep trouble, and were usually under bad rule from foreign countries, or their own king and queen. The United States was the saving grace, and came in acting as a supernatural or godly figure. As presented in The Empire and Its People an excerpt from President McKinley states, “The truth is I didn 't want the Philippines, and when they came to us as a gift from the gods”. He claims that he did not want the Philippines instead he received them as a gift, and he could not let the Philippines down. The US could not make the Spanish made and not accept this territory, so McKinley was “forced” to keep the Philippines. McKinley planned to uplift, civilize and christianize the population, this idea is known as Benevolent Assimilation. While the country was a part of the Treaty of Paris as result of the Spanish-American War, the Filippo 's thought they were going to be under good control, for a short period of time, until they can gain back their independence. Smaller countries were in dire need of help and the US claimed to help them, but instead tried to destroy them. Their cultures were destroyed, and their people were abused, for the US kicked them when they were down. The US empowered themselves while tearing down other countries, making their actions unjust. Manifest destiny gave the US the right to spread West across the land that was interrupted by large bodies of water; they did not have the right to spread overseas and torture people of already claimed lands, so that they US could become more powerful. The US could have used a different tactic in these lands and made accomplices with the people, but they went and claimed the land in a destructive and demeaning way.
