Western Civilization: Learning From Past Mistakes

Improved Essays
At the beginning of the semester, we were required to answer the questions of “what is history and why does it matter?” From what I can recall, I had the answer along the lines that history is a study of past events that can be useful to help us learn from our past mistakes. From my original answer, it seems short and simple. But after taking this course of Western Civilization, I think that the answer to both questions is much more than a simple answer. I think a part of why history matters does include learning from past mistakes, but I think that there is more we can learn from studying past events. As we studied about the Greeks and Romans, it is evident that we have adapted some of their inventions and ideas from their time. In the …show more content…
One of the most prevalent aspects of Greek and Roman life is war. Furthermore, learning about their war tactics and how their past wars succeeded or failed could benefit our soldiers in figuring out an action plan for combat. In about every battle or war, it is said that one side will examine the land before choosing which side of the land they will march on. For an example, in the Battle of Cannae during the Second Punic War, Hannibal knew that the Romans would have triple the amount of soldier than him. However, he knew that the number would matter as much if he could have the Roman army have the disadvantages of the land they would fight on. So Hannibal made sure to figure out which direction is the prevailing winds in order to have the wind and dust blowing with them and have it blow against the enemies. They also used battle tactics from the Battle of Marathon which caused them to win the battle. From that event, Hannibal was able to win the battle by studying previous battle tactics and reapplying it to his own situation. John Fea attempts to answer the question posed in the title of his book, “Why Study History?” He answers this question in eight chapters that talk about the different aspects of history. In chapter one, Fea talks about the role of historians as “revisionists.” Though history can be revealed through simple facts, it is meaningless without a story. Historians try to identify the story behind the facts by following the five C’s: change, context, causality, contingency, and complexity.…

History helps establish an understanding as to why things are the way they are and why our governing system is the way it is. Events that happen today could affect our tomorrow, for instance, when the horrific situation that occurred on 9/11 went on to impact airport security all the way up until now. This is why I believe the definition I came up with defines history to me. Every small thing that happens is a big thing in history.…

One of the most influential quotes about history that was ever said was by Edmund Burke who stated “those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” This is such a powerful quote because it explains the significance of knowing the past and how valuable it can be. Those who are unaware of the past will repeat it because they are unaware of what has occurred before and what lessons can be learned from those events. One of my favorite musical artists, J. Cole, once stated in his song “Fire Squad,” “History repeats itself and that 's just how it goes.” With all of these iconic individuals sharing the value of History, it becomes very evident to me how crucial it…

History is often seen as memorizing dates of battles and names of people who are long dead. However, I view history as the story of how modern society came to be instead. I took multiple history courses throughout high school, but my favorite class was AP World History. Rather than being isolated in one particular location, I studied how multiple cultures interacted and how they influenced each other. The course introduced me to regions, such as the Middle East, that I previously never even thought about.…

A Radical’s Radical Plan to Eliminate Radicals When I was younger, I remember many days where I came home from school and asked my dad “Why do we have to learn history. It’s not like it's going to help me at all when I’m a grownup.” I could understand why we would need to learn subjects like English or math, and their applications in the “real world”, but I was always stumped on history. Puzzling me, he would respond every time by saying “those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.”…

What a person does today will affect the future. If a person tries hard and works for something that they really want, or if they do not try at all then it will affect the outcome. History literally means his or her story. Stories are told to each generation to keep the memory alive and that is why history is so important, because otherwise the past would be unknown and people would not know the kind of hurt their families went through to be free, or the things that their ancestors did to make sure that their families in the future would get what they need. This is how the Underground Railroad is; it is stories of the hurt and tortured people that could just not take the pain any more so they took a stand, whether it meant losing their life…

An open sea battle between the two would likely result in Carthage emerging victorious (Levin, 2002, June). However, the Romans had devised a clever solution. First, the Romans commenced work on reverse engineering a beached Carthaginian vessel and subsequently constructed a hundred vessels in its image in an astounding sixty-day period (Morey, 1901). Next, the Romans equipped each vessel with a bridge which it could attach to an enemy vessel allowing the Roman soldiers to board it thereby altering the makeup of the battle form a ship to ship battle into one involving hand to hand combat at which the Romans excelled (Loon, 1997; Morey…
