Westboro Baptist Research Paper

Intolerance is unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behavior that differ from one's own. (“Intolerance Definition”) Groups all over the world are intolerant, one of these groups is the Westboro Baptists. This group is notorious for being a “hate cult”. They have picketed anything and everything: Lady Gaga concerts, soldier’s funerals, even funerals of those who have been killed in bombings and shootings. They will picket anything that will gain them attention; the more controversial the better. This group believes one thing; everyone who is not one of them is going to hell, without a doubt. The Westboro Baptist Church started protesting and picketing in 1991. The first protest was held at Gage Park in Topeka, Kansas. The group was protesting gay people. While on a bike ride, Fred Phelps the founder of Westboro Baptist Church, rode faster than his two grandsons and got ahead of them. When he rode back to get them, a man, who turned out to be gay, was trying to lure them into the trees, with the intention of molesting them. Phelps was outraged and told the city they needed to “clean the park”. Westboro Baptist Church is the definition of intolerant, they will not change what they believe. They interpret the Bible very literally. They are extremists who believe in their own religion and will never change that opinion. Other churches are able to change and agree with some ideas, but this “church” is not. Westboro Baptist Church thinks that they are the messengers sent from God, yet they do not act respectfully towards others. Therefore in most outsiders minds the members of Westboro Baptist Church are not the messengers, they are just inconsiderate or
