In this song West raps about his relationship with friend and fellow rapper Jay Z and the relationship the two have while making many references to their lives. The first line is referring to how Jay Z (whom West affectionately refers to as his brother) went from little brother of Biggie Smalls (Whom was a mentor in Jay Z’s early career) to a big brother (as being the mentor of West). At the end of the song, West alludes to the poem’s lynching ideas when the last line mentions death and unholy matrimony. Kanye West starts off the song talking about a bigger population then himself, when using the word “we.” West wants to acknowledge that he understands what it is like to be underprivileged and run into problems.
