Pretty Much Romeo and Juliet Imagine two lovers that would suffer in pain and show no mercy just to see each other, but separation of families and gangs are keeping them apart. This thought is actually how things were between the strong loving young couple living in New York, Tony and Maria. The two gangs, the Sharks and the Jets, are bitter rivals with each other, but the two lovers, Tony and Maria, come from the different gangs and different races. Tony and Maria are very devoted to each other, but there are many obstacles they had to face in order to keep their love going strong. So, in the fictional novel, West Side Story, by Irving Shulman, the theme that love is complicated is depicted through characterization, dialogue, and motifs.

When Tony states this, he characterizes himself as someone who will do anything for anybody that he loves and cares for because he does not care if the Sharks “cut his heart out,” as long as he is with Maria.
