West-Side-Night Performance Review

Decent Essays
I had the opportunity to attend the opening night performance of the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company’s production of West Side Story. Personally I feel that the experience was most definitely worth the price of admission. The cast, dancers, and orchestra all performed flawlessly and even received a standing ovation from the audience. This was my first time to ever see this particular musical and the story-line is absolutely riveting; the ending scene after Tony, the male lead, died almost brought me to tears. The plot has a very powerful message about how hate and prejudices destroys lives. The music in the production ranged from lively and upbeat numbers to slow moving ballads. I particularly liked the number “America” because I

The first two songs in particular really stuck out to me because of how fresh the singers’ voices were in combination with the overall styles of the songs. I loved the bass playing on “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” as well as the ad-libbing and harmony performed on it. The harmonious scatting performed was very intricate, and elicited bright, popping colors such as bright yellow, orange, hot pink, and a minty, aquamarine color; a different color was heard for each part of the four-part vocal harmony. “Love is Here to Stay” was more relaxing. The vocal arrangement created a dream-like, floating vibe, comparable to a lullaby, and because it was a capella, I could hear everything clearly.…

On Sunday, June 21st, I went to see the Dallas Symphony Orchestra perform “The Music of John Williams and Hollywood’s Great Composers” at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. The concert was held in the church’s worship room at 6:30pm. This was a great place for the DSO to perform because the audience and the orchestra were very close and, in a way, felt more personal. The show included fourteen pieces: “Overture to Captain Blood by Korngold, ‘Tara’ – A Short Poem for Orchestra from Gone with the Wind by Steiner, arr.…

I, Randy Rivas, attended a performance with two separate chamber groups and a soloist. One of the chamber groups was Christine S. Lopez and Sung Ae Lee both performing on piano, the other was Paul Da Silva playing piano and Manon Robertshaw on cello, and lastly Sung Ae Lee doing a solo performance. This was performed at Cerritos College in the music building at BC-51. It began at eleven in the morning on February twenty sixth. First musical performance was the piece of Muzio Clementi’s sonata in B flat major for two pianos.…

Jack the Ripper: the Monster of White Chapel, by playwright Joe Dickinson. This play was honestly like nothing I’ve ever seen before. There were so many great elements to the show, the humor, audience interaction, props and just full of character to name a few. I had the pleasure of viewing this piece with several apparent regulars to the Pocket Sandwich Theatre off of East Mockingbird, Dallas Tx, on 10/15/15.…

Charley’s aunt was suppose to arrive the morning of the lunch date, but she didn’t so, using the costume from his school performance, he dressed as a woman and pretended to be his aunt. This semester, I have seen numerous of productions that were enjoyable and at the same time, shared a common theme towards the end of the play which was there ticket towards freedom. The two productions I thought resemble this includes Father Comes Home from the Wars and the Royale. These two productions had a common connection of racism moments when they were trying to reach freedom. The main character in each of the productions had a difficult time stepping out of their comfort zones due to the lack of confidence they had and both of the theaters had the proper lights and props to represent the characters.. Father Comes Home from the Wars is a play written by Suzen- Lori Parks that was performed at the Royal Court Theatre.…

On January 19th, I watched the play entitled “Driving Miss Daisy” written by playwright Alfred Uhry which was featured at the John Golden Theatre in 2010. The play told the story of a wealthy Jewish woman named Miss Daisy Werthan, her son Boolie and the African American driver named Hoke who was hired to drive her around after Boolie became worried about his mother’s safety following a car accident that occurred prior to the play being introduced. Although there were many things in the play that caught my interest, the elements that were most crucial to the play was the set design and the acting. I think even though there were only 3 actors throughout the play and there wasn’t any big landscape changes, the play was entertaining and the acting was believable and well-done. I also believe that the setting of the play was an interesting choice because the only thing on the stage in one of the scenes was 1 white chair and a wooden bench.…

In West Side Story it depicts an intense gang rivalry. If I was to write a musical based on two antagonistic social or racial groups today, I would write about the classic “good girl” dates a “bad boy”. Staying with this idea you have Emily the daughter of a Chief of Police in Chicago; a well behaved girl, straight A’s student, and student body President. Dating Roberto the leader of one worse gangs ever in Chicago the Latin King. When the Chief of Police finds out about Roberto he goes to scare off, Roberto by saying if you ever go near Emily I will kill you.…

While walking into the Gershwin Theater in New York City, people flow past quickly going to their seats to wait for the play to begin. As the lights dim in the large room, many people erupt into loud cheers and claps of excitement. The play begins with a soft string instrument, and is joined by the melodious sound of drums, flutes, and trumpets. The actors appear on stage swiftly as the life of the Wicked Witch of the West is portrayed on the slanted platform in front. Theater has allowed people to enjoy a show and create a bonding experience with one another.…

Being able to choreograph and perform in dance concert is a very unique and amazing experience. Creating ideas with everyone around you and transforming those ideas into a masterpiece is a process like no other. With everyone’s opinions out in thin air, you can put all of your ideas into one to create something so beautiful. In Modern especially it was really intriguing to watch the whole process of how the dance was created. Since we did originally have a combo to go off of, it was different watching all the different groups create a combo over the steps but just in a different format.…

As a historical drama, it revolves around events that happened in the past. Therefore, the special effects in this movie was not as prominent compared to a sci-fi movie. Most of the tracks included in the soundtrack were written by Alexandre Desplat, a French film composer. As a musician, I would say the most outstanding tracks were by Beethoven even if the movie only included one or two tracks of his work. The background music fit the scenes as perfect as a glove.…
