West Point Way Of Leadership Summary

For my required book I read West Point Way of Leadership. This book, while not the most interesting at times, did teach me quite a few things. The lesson that impacted me the most was that to be a leader, you must first be a follower. I think that this lesson is the most important because it’s often overlooked when one learns about leadership. It’s the most important and impactful lesson because even in everyday life it applies. I have to listen and obey my parents before I can boss my sister around. I have to be a lower worker before I am the boss. The emphasized the four “passes” the cadets go through. “The First Pass shows how the Academy forges the bonds that strengthen the organization.” This is done by emphasizing teamwork and teaching

At some point, every leader probably thinks about how they want to lead and what is important to him or her as a leader. During the CSC coursework, I wrote my command philosophy, which gave me an opportunity to reflect on past leaders I had encountered, and project how I wanted to lead in the future. The command philosophy was a statement, written to the members of the unit, about what I valued as a leader. As a foundation for how to approach this philosophy, the CSC coursework described USMC General Lejeune’s teacher/scholar leadership approach (USMC CDET, 2013a). This approach to leadership rests on a foundation of ethics, directly supporting an ethos of core values, mode of conduct, leadership principles, and leadership traits (USMC…

In Leadership Group Communication COM 430, we were required to choose a leadership book and write about it. The book that I chose was Dale Carniege's How to Win Friends and Influence People. This was a book that was recommended to me by another Arizona State University alumni who jumped at the question when I asked them "what book should I read for my leadership class? " I later found out after purchasing the book that it has been in publication for the last 75 years.…

One of the key factors in development is experience. Through exposure to differing situations and circumstances, one is able to assess his or her own decisions and draw conclusions as how they have developed. The west point leadership development system does well to give cadets a lot of exposure to new and challenging experiences from which they can grow. However, because of the factors that west point cannot control, each individual cadet’s experiences, while similar in many different ways, are unique to his or her circumstances. I have experienced many things at west point, but there is much I have not learned.…

The main idea of the book I choose the book “Act like a leader, think like a leader, by Herminia Ibarra, which is inspirational read for everyone who has a passion for leading. Ibarra, redefines the traditional leadership notion of “think first, and then act’’ by acting first and then thinking. She described The “Outsight Principle” which is the mine idea of this book. Through the implementation of the “outsight principle”, Ibarra believes that one can improve or develop into an effective leader. This principle attests that the only way to think like a leader is to first act it out and that is to come out of ones’ comfort zone by start doing changes and more experiences.…

Business issue: Approaches to Leadership I would think that organizations embrace additional approaches to leadership when problems are not being mitigated by the usual approach. A long-standing leadership model is the Fiedler contingency model; its revamped version is called the cognitive resource theory. “The contingency theory of leadership has proven to be one of the most valid and reliable measures of an individual’s leadership potential” (Waters, 2013). Likewise, “cognitive resource theory is developing a solid body of research support” (Robbins and Judge, 2009, p. 395).…

    1. The model of being 70% ready and have 70% consensus would be appropriate for larger projects that involve the specific library location or the entirety of the library system, such as implementing new PC’s or gearing up for summer reading programming. As many of our classmates have stated, it’s virtually impossible to be 100% prepared for any situation since you have to account for any sticky circumstances to appear. As an example, for the just-passed summer reading program at the system I work for, they implemented a new software that was not completely ready due to technical issues, lack of complete training, and the absence of time to really prepare before the launch. As a whole, the staff knew what they had to do and the basics of getting…
