West Islip High School Research Paper

Year after year, students at West Islip High School are absolutely distraught when they get their schedules in the summer. This year, as well as previous years, many students had to go to their guidance counselor and change things before the school year even started! Still, others waited until the first day, or even the first week before requesting changes. Some students reported having multiple gym and lunch periods, while others had classes in their schedule that were supposed to be every day, but they only had these classes every other day, making it nearly impossible for them to keep up with their peers. Michelle Falco, a guidance counselor whom has been working in West Islip High School for fourteen years, has seen mostly every complaint there is. Falco states, “What Dr. Bridgeman does is he works on a master schedule, where he takes every single course that they offer here at the high school. He looks at how many students are enrolled in each section of classes that we offer, and then he build schedules around that. He also has to build it around teacher availability.” Falco says that there is a science to schedules, and it isn't just thrown together, as many students have claimed. Still, most students would say that something should change, and Falco has explained that something very likely will.
