I believe Wellesley College is the place for me is because almost everyday, I find myself spiraling down a internet wormhole.-from wanting to learn more about the cardiovascular system or the story of Heloise and Abelard. My mind works in unexpected ways. I fall in love with words and ideas everyday, from idioms, French slang to medical mnemonics. In class, we learned that “Culture is sets of learned behaviors and ideas that human beings acquire as members of society” (Lavenda p.230). In the book, My Freshman Year, one of the main parts of it is understanding other cultures. As an anthropologist, you always want to be able to have a better understanding about humans. According to book the author, Rebekah Nathan was having a hard time understanding what was going on with her students and why were not they acting like students she has taught in the past. Sarah Braun, a 2007 Monmouth College graduate, is living proof that curiosity can take you anywhere. The showcase of Braun’s adventurous lifestyle and attitude was a wonderful way for us incoming college freshman to see the many opportunities that can be possible if one only strives hard enough and applies themselves within a liberal arts curriculum. Braun’s thesis of curiosity can take you anywhere applies to our recent reading of the book Curious by Ian Leslie. As Braun mentioned within the convocation, Leslie describes diversive curiosity as, “follows no particular process or method, but slides from one novel object of attention to the next” (Leslie). Braun explained that it was this type of curiosity that led her to some of her passions.…

Having the ability to pursue a wide range of subjects is important to me, and I need a college that would allow that. Because of its flexible curriculum, Johns Hopkins would be a place where I could build my interests of computer science, genetics, and community service. Computer science is one of my main focuses and my intended major. My interest in computers came mainly through reading about the tasks that computers can accomplish in publications like Popular Science and…

Goals and Expectations for My Time At Castleton and Beyond Castleton is the perfect environment for me to exercise and apply the ideas expressed in Zakaria’s book, In Defense of a Liberal Education. After reading the assigned book this summer I found that I gained a new understanding of how schools are run, from elementary to higher education. Throughout my time in high school I experienced an ever growing curiosity as I was being exposed to new ideas by both my teachers and my peers, but not being thoroughly taught about these new subjects. Castleton is where I hope to gain the ability to explore these curiosities I’ve acquired more effectively both in and out of the classroom. I was never quite sure what it meant to go to a liberal arts…

“Traying” was the first entry that caught my eye because it shows that Wellesley is the type of school that has traditions and a tight-knit community, which is something I am looking for in a college. Not only does sledding on a lunch tray sound incredibly entertaining, but the tradition illustrates that even though Wellesley students work hard, they also find time to have fun. “Traying” demonstrates that finding an optimal balance between work and play is important to the Wellesley community. Additionally, “Traying” exemplifies the “fun” aspect of college that students look forward to.…

So, what would happen if one was compacted into a home that in its entirety is less than 500 square feet? On one hand, the subsequent need to drastically minimize one’s entire life could give an opportunity for a fresh start without the overwhelming burden of clutter, which disrupts life. However, it could also make one feel cramped and unable to function. The tiny house movement forces its followers to minimize their belongings, but no thought is made as to the psychological effect this will have on the person.…

In some educational settings across the country, student choice, especially when selecting courses, is becoming increasingly rigid. Even with elective courses, school systems are adding requirements to fulfill perceived needs, such as financial literacy and technological skills. Some school systems are experimenting with expansion in elective options, but most of those programs involve online instruction only. With reports of decreased motivation and reductions in student engagement as the high school years progress, one solution is to regard all courses as elective.…
