John Rawls in his work “Theory of Justice” explains that in order to have complete social justice in society we need a state which does no discrimination and provides some basic standard of living and looks after those who don’t have the sufficient means to support themselves. In his work Rawls has supported the idea that the state should provide the basic standard of living to all.
Introduction
Welfare state is a concept of state in which the government takes an active role in protecting and developing the economic and socio- economic rights of the citizens. It is based on the principles of equality of opportunity, equitable distribution of wealth, and public responsibility for those unable to avail themselves of the minimal provisions for a good life . Rawls in his works shows that for creating justice in the society welfare state is required to be in function as there are certain conditions which is needed to be fulfilled such as equal socio economic rights, equality and so on. Rawls never explicitly justifies welfare state nor did he spoke about welfare state for that matter but he always supported the institution of welfare state to create justice in the society. It’s in his theory of justice only that we see his support for welfare state. In his second theory of justice we see Rawls supporting the basic elements of welfare state. In his second theory Rawls talks about creating equal socio economic rights in the economy for having justice. He says that each and every person should be provided with a basic standard of living which is to be maintained by the state for all its citizens. Rawls never talked about welfare state being an important aspect but just as a stepping stone to achieving social
