Everyone loves something free. Stores advertise for free deals to bring people in, and "free" seems to have a desirable connotation about it, but what does free exactly mean? Someone once stated, "Free cheese is always available in mouse traps." Well, mice love cheese right, that's obvious; but a mouse trap kilsl the mice. The free cheese is the bait to get the mice towards the stuff they love, but they end up having to pay for that cheese with their life. In other words, something is never free. Someone, somewhere has to pay for that free thing, even if it doesn't directly affect you. The “free thing” being referred to in this situation is welfare, or “free” handouts for the needy people. The price is the rise of debt and economical problems …show more content…
The welfare programs today are predominantly exploited and end up having more disadvantages to them. One of the reasons it can be easily exploited is because of the limited regulations surrounding who is able to get the free handouts and who is not able to. For those who get into the programs, many of them end up depending on the welfare programs too much. In doing so, they defeat the purpose of welfare in the first place: to help those in need back onto their feet and into the economy again. By staying in the program past their point of need, they are not only using government funds, but also depriving the economy of their would be contribution to cash flow in the economy. The government cannot afford to help everyone in poverty all the way out and back into the economy again; the people must put in effort as well. But because of those who exploit the system, it turns a of the percentage welfare funding into unnecessary as well as money spent that the government does not have …show more content…
Some are more beneficial and harder to exploit than others. Overall, there are roughly 13 types or categories (not including Medicaid). For those without an income and not having to pay income tax, there is the Negative Income Tax policy, which gives them money in place of them paying taxes since they do not have an income. SNAP is a food stamp program for those in need of money to purchase food. However, currently the form in which the food stamp is issued as a debit card. During the Great Depression, when welfare began to be implemented widespread, one of the factors that kept people from over using food stamps and welfare was the embarrassment of having to rely on them. They got off of them as soon as they could to spare themselves from more embarrassment. This transformation into the simple use of food stamps takes away that social pressure to stop relying on government help and support yourself, which has led to more exploitation. HUD organizes public housing throughout the states. Just able persons or people over 65 years are supported by SSI, which pays them a certain amount of money over time. TANF is a temporary assistance program to get people back on their feet and back into the economy (this is the more beneficial kind of welfare and should be implemented more). Some people get a high amount of money for assistance when they do not need it and others get a low amount even though they truly need it. From a personal experience my great aunt at the age of 76 was only allotted $15 in food stamps per month. She had no other income besides Social Security Income (SSI). While others I knew got almost $400 for themselves and one child plus she worked a decent job. Another person did not have any dependents and received $200 while not working and being on drugs.…

As an American citizen, individuals are entitled to various means of assistance from not only the federal government, but from state legislature as well. However, as part of a recently formed Congressional Committee, I am faced with the decision of choosing to eliminate one of three vital welfare programs due to their being no option for reconstruction of any one of these programs. Options at hand for removal include Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Although all of these are vital, however I am recommending the elimination of the TANF due to circumstances that cause it to be essentially less crucial than the other two programs. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a program that supplies grant funds to states to provide families with financial assistance and other related services such as job preparation and work assistance.…

A topic that has been roaming around Texas has been the usage of food stamps, and the careless act of people. Millions of dollars have been wasted on people that do not even need the government’s help, and the others that honestly need it, go on working hard, to earn money for food. The government believes they are shortening hunger when clearly, they are making it worst. Food Stamps is the second most expensive welfare there is. To receive food stamps, you must have received a low income and have had children that out of nowhere keep on multiplying.…

Most Americans assume that welfare is just giving money to the lazy or uneducated, but it is so much more. The welfare program does offer cash assistance for lower income families called TANF, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It also offers SNAP, which is the food and nutrition program or food stamps, along with WIC which offers pregnant mothers as well as infants and children a supplemented way to purchase milk, cheese and other food products that are necessary for a healthy pregnancy or infant. Medicaid health care for those who cannot afford insurance, childcare support for families that cannot afford childcare or that would be unable to work without childcare, Utility or energy assistance for those who need help with their utilities, and finally, vocational rehabilitation services which help families finish their education, teach them a new vocation or just help in job placement. The program is designed to help families better themselves and their situation; the goal is to guide individuals to a path that leads to personal success taking them away and off the welfare programs.…

Many of those who receive the welfare benefits are happy with just getting a chunk of money and other items than to work for many of the benefits that the government rewards them for doing nothing(Cozic). A possibility for reforming the current welfare is that certain people might lose the welfare benefits if they cannot meet the work hours, which in turn would decrease the number of those receiving money from the hard earned taxpayer…

Many will rely on it as a main source of income rather than finding a job and supporting their family with earned income. The unemployement rate is officially at its lowest since 2008, that's nearly 12 million Americans out of work; but does that mean their is no income within the household. If they are working under the table, there is no way to track their finances. Giving handouts creates more beggars, not producers. Welfare misuse and abuse impacts every citizen working.…

The lack of proper checks when applying for assistance is the primary reason why welfare abuse occurs. In addition, legislators and the creators have made assistance so easy to get, which is why so many people are on assistance. I have over two years of experience working in retail and have seen first hand how many people don’t deserve to have it. Multiple times I have witnessed a person use welfare assistance to pay for their groceries, and walk out to a brand new or next to new vehicle. Similarly, some people will have top of the line technology and/or be a tobacco user.…

There are some people under welfare programs who were found to be abusing then and even came to a point of being dishonest of their status (Green Garage 3). This is because they have become too dependent on these programs, which should not be the case (Green Garage 3). Welfare also has some issues with regards to the cost to the exchequer (Green Garage 3). The money that funds all the welfare reform comes from the citizen’s taxes. While it is good to know that that tax money is going into those welfare programs, there are times that it becomes very costly for that state or country to bear (Green Garage 3).…

Food stamps are being abused and used for meaningless things. The Government Accountability office reported," a number of SNAP benefits paid in error is substantial, totaling about $2.2 million in 2009"(Montgomery). The Government is working on making SNAP benefits harder to abuse, but despite the effort, millions are still being used. However, some argue that food stamps don't give enough variety or quality to meet the nutrition needs of several Americans. By focusing on the select variety and money per month overlooks the deeper problem of people abusing the system, whether that means using multiple cards or using SNAP benefits when they have no need for it.…

I know welfare is a big problem in the world today. My opinion on this is that people don’t want to work because they know that they are able to get welfare from the government. These are people who can work but don’t want to and then there are the ones who can’t work for some reason that I don’t know. The perspective about this coming from some social workers is that it might make it kind of difficult for some individuals to thrive and come to reach their full potential.…

Programs such as SNAP need to be regulated, in that qualifying means to be drug tested and receipts sent in for auditing purchases. In regards to qualifying for social welfare, the “Current Population Survey (CPS) derives the official poverty rate by comparing incomes to the absolute poverty that was calculated back in the 1955 consumption patterns” (Cochran). This rate is absurd, when people apply for benefits the system “counts only cash income” (Cochran). In many situations a family may not qualify for benefits through income, but qualifies after deductions such as medical and healthcare costs, taxes and other work expenses. Too many are dependent on the government funding and decide to stay there.…

The welfare program in the United States is abused by many Americans. Citizens in the program get their sense of responsibility muted causing dependency on the government. The government does not give its users a limit of how many people they will provide for, causing them to have bigger families in return for more money. There is a misuse of government grants and aids, and many abuse the money received.
