The American welfare system has been around since the early 1900’s. Its intention was to help the needy, the people who are unable to support themselves due to unemployment or underemployment, and it has done a pretty good job of helping these people not be homeless. The number of people who abuse the welfare system is not as big as people make it out to be. My friend who is on welfare has to prove he is working a certain amount of hours, and if he can not prove that they terminate his benefits or make him come in and do community service, and as far as they will just go out and get jobs, most welfare recipients already have jobs but minimum wage doesn’t pay a livable wage. And the last point “we should let them fend for themselves because I don’t want to have to pay into a program that doesn’t benefit me” We are a civilized country and have an obligation to help the poor and not just let them fend for themselves.
So to sum it up, If Welfare benefits were immediately abolished it would cause Social Unrest and Chaos to ensue because of the increased crime due to being thrown into extreme poverty, there would be widespread homelessness, due to the fact that people on these benefits who are barely making it by would not be able to afford shelter, and riots would ensue due to the heavy disdain for our
