o Historical Trauma: We spent two class sessions discussing historical trauma, and we specifically discussed the plights of Aboriginal children in Australia and Native American children in the United States. Our discussion surrounding the intent of the perpetrators was fascinating, and it was heartbreaking to hear the way in which oppressors on both continents felt justified, and even responsible, to carry out atrocities. In a certain way, the perpetrators did have compassion, and many of them claimed to be acting out of good virtues. Since compassion is the “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it,” the perpetrators of abuse thus were technically acting compassionate in that they felt their attempt to “Whiten” children was in the children’s best interest.…

Throughout the 1900’s there was a lot of things built up against the United States, from WWII to the civil rights movements there was plenty for the citizens and the government to deal with. One important part of this time that people forget is the attacks and discrimination of different homosexual groups within this time. Thus it is believed that the U.S. should have gotten involved in stopping any persecution of homosexual individuals or groups in the 1900’s because, if they had done something then there might not be any of the difficulties and misunderstanding that there is today. One prime example of this was during WWII. Today when the topic of this horrible period is brought up the first thought is that of the thousands of Jews taken,…

In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…

Because I am a Coptic Orthodox Christian, my religion and culture have always been intertwined. However, I used to view my education as apart from them, as there was only one other Copt in my high school and there were none in my elementary or middle school. When I began this semester at NJIT, I realized that I had been missing something for the past thirteen years of my schooling. In just a matter of weeks, I found myself at home within the Coptic community here. I have recognized a few of its main purposes, all of which are evident in the modes and styles of communication: to develop a strong support network, to cultivate a sense of family, and to ease the transition for new students.…

Throughout the history of activism within the LGBT+ community, there has been a common goal to promote openness and acceptance. By employing a strategy modeled after the civil rights movement, which mainly focused on assimilation into the dominant institutions as a means of acceptance, activist groups have received their fair share of criticism. In 1997, Cathy J Cohen, a Black lesbian author and social activist, published the groundbreaking article “Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential of Queer Politics?” a year after a controversy she introduces in the beginning of the essay. The famed Gay Men’s Health Crisis, best known for their active role in the treatment of HIV/AIDS during the AIDS crisis, came under fire after…
