Weitz Analysis

In the article Weitz introduces the terms open concepts versus closed concepts, and describes how they relate to our reasoning of what we consider to be art. Briefly, a concept is how concisely an idea or subject is expressed, and if objects fit into this criteria. If all objects do not precisely fit into these restraints then it becomes an open concept, subject to change. Open concepts, when compared to closed concepts, are not concrete and always up for debate and modification.
A mom is something I would consider to be a closed concept. The criterion of a mom is a woman, who is older than oneself, who offers support, whether it be emotional, social, or financial. The term ‘mom’ is a subjective and affectionate title as opposed to an objective one, like mother, that implies biological linage or the sex of the person being a female. Music varies so vastly, as a result of cultural, historic, and preferential differences that it would be rather difficult to pinpoint what constitutes music and what does not. Skill, style, and the length of the musical piece are not direct determinants of what is considered music because it is a multi-faceted medium. While music is consistently more revered as the musician’s skill and expertise increases, music created by amateur musicians is still respected in its own right. Pop music, which is also considered pop art, is an example of this. While most pop singers do not have the training or range of an opera singer, per say, these singers still enjoy success and their work is still regarded as music, nonetheless. While most music the general population listens to today ranges from two minutes to five minutes in length, the piece’s length also is not a criterion for classifying music.
