Weigle's Portrayal Of Women In Only When Creation Myths

Decent Essays
Even though women are given a bad image, people might say that they are very important in the fact(,) that women are the heart and soul of life. Women are important for reproduction and have power in the sense that they carry the future. Moreover, this is the only time when women are important. In Weigle’s view,” Only when creation myths tell of cosmos generated through natural reproductive processes do female creator deities enact significant roles” (Weigle 84). Going back to the situation with Joseph and Mary in The Gospel of Matthew, Mary is only relevant when spoken about her son Jesus since he is the one creating change. This connects to what Weigle was expressing because it shows how women are only important when it comes to having children.

Yet, the instance in which she addresses the Roman solider and he actually listens (whether out of respect or recognition of her authority in that moment) would have been shocking. The role that women like Old Sarah and Mary played in the novel was most certainly a foreshadowing of what was to come, as Jesus placed a high value on women and interacted with them in counter-cultural…

In the poem “God Says Yes to Me” by Kaylin Haught depicts God as a female rather than male which is most commonly seen in most religions. Her representation of God is seen to support her in all things regardless of its little importance. Upon reading Egalia’s Daughters by Gerd Brantenberg, it became more evident to me just how much more women are sexually oppressed in present day society. Brantenberg created this hypothetical town of Egalia where wom (women) and menwom (men) switched the roles we currently see as gender norms today. Overall, I thought she did a great job putting things into perspective in terms of views on sexual oppression. Although this satire portrayed a switch in gender roles, it felt as if the roles of menwom were not an accurate depiction of the sexual oppression women face. Not in any way am I disrespecting the idea behind Brantenberg’s satire, but to some extent it seemed that menwom were more celebrated in society, than women are overall today.…

I chose to look at the document from the Seneca Falls Convention which included The Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. This document details the time leading up to and the outcome of the Seneca Falls Convention. Part of this document was detailing how the Convention came to be, by whom, and how it went. The main points of the Convention and the Declaration was to demand rights for women, particularly rights to be seen equal, as God intended, the right to vote, and the right in religious and social areas. The Thoegony or the genealogy or birth of the gods is a poem written by Hesiod in 700 B.C, describing the genealogy of the Ancient Greek gods. Hesiod was a poet who lived around 700 B.C, and is one of the rare poets whose compositions survive to this day. Hesiod was always compared to Homer; it is uncertain who was born first, but both lived around the same time due to the similar epic dialect of Homeric Greek. It is believed that the Theogony was probably influenced by some Near-Eastern traditions such as the Babylonians, who were mixed with local traditions; while some suggest that the Mycenaean traditions might also have an impact on the Theogony.…

The creation of men and women of God is considered to be equal. Amongst each other, men and women should have the same range of rights and freedom. However in society, men are predominantly seen as more superior in ranking than women. In fact, as Oscar Wilde states, “women have a much better time than men in this world; there are far more things forbidden to them” (quotery). Likewise, in countries like Saudi Arabia and Vatican City women are restricted to vote and forbidden to maneuver around without the presence of a man.…
