This is extraordinary technology because all other devices stimulate some part…
By understanding the psychological and physiological development of a child, health care providers enhance the effectiveness of the rehabilitation care. The author created four amputee dolls believing that they can help patients and and their parents in accepting the situation they are facing (see figure1). These dolls are not only use to have fun or to distract patients. They are also use to make the pediatric amputees not to be disturbed on how they look in front of the other kids out there. Peers are important to pediatric amputees therefore, it is important that the able-bodied children are aware about children with disabilities and the prostheses they are wearing.…
Comfort is a warmth we feel in our bones. It is a sense of security curious in nature. We find it in the arms of a loved one, between the sleeves of family photo albums, and in the cushions of our favorite shoes; or, in my case, in the stitches of my favorite blanket. It is amazing how we can find comfort in the simplest of things. I have had my baby blanket for so long it may as well have been another sibling.…
Background/history: Susan is a 48-year-old women with a primary disability of severe depression, secondary disabilities include: anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and possible learning disabilities. This evaluation was requested by her Massachusetts Rehabilitation Counselor Holly Wentzell to determine if Susan would benefit from assistive technology, which would assist her with meeting her vocational goal of receiving her certificate in Human Services. Functional Capacities: Susan is able to complete all basic activities of daily living with independence. She is able to ambulate across all surfaces without the utilization of an assistive device.…
Plus they help with more severe anxiety, stress, etc. A mother that had a daughter who has autism, said "For her, the spinner Is not a must-have craze to be like her friends, but more a stress release from the demands placed upon her during her school day — much the same as she uses a stress ball or her twist-and-lock blocks," Gwynne wrote. "When schools decide to ban sensory and fidget toys, they risk Isolating the very children they’ve spent years trying to Include." This…
This reflection is taken from my reflective journal. I have summarised my Southern Cross University (SCU) field placement at Uniting-Pacifica (UP), picking out some key issues/events. This is a 'cleaned up' version of the reflection and the grammar has been corrected. The reflection uses the Gibb's model of reflection and it has been anonymised (Gibbs 1988).…
As I get buzzed into the station by Chuck, my usual crew chief and mentor, I am already set to begin the comprehensive inspection of our ambulance’s inventory lovingly termed “the rig check.” With 207 items comprising said inventory, it’s not going to be a short check in any sense, but to me, it’s still one of most valuable jobs that I perform as a member of the Clinton rescue squad. When I first joined the squad as a cadet, I marveled at the sheer quantity of tools and supplies housed within the seemingly endless cabinets, compartments, and containers of the rig. From backboards and neck collars to jumper cables and blue gatorade mix, this super-stocked crimson force of nature had every item to solve every problem that our plucky team of…
Supervise the children to make sure needed modifications are made to reflect the changing abilities on going process. Assistive technology such as, a tape recorder to play audio for a student with reading disability or a data manager to store information like appointments and reminders for students with memory difficulties, can be one way to lessen frustration and difficulty. Adebisi et al. (2015) made a point that without the independence that assistive technology can create "relying on others might slow transition to adulthood and lower self…
Sensory Integration also known as Sensory Processing is a specialty area of occupational therapy that is based on over 40 years of theory and research. The term “sensory integration” refers to: the way the brain organizes sensations for engagement in occupation. Sensory Integration is most commonly discussed for children with Autism but has also been used for students with other developmental disabilities as well. When children or adults need assistance in their environments with sensory integration, it is because they display sensory under-responsivity or sensory over-responsivity to stimuli all around them. Often you will see children displaying some of the following behaviors: flapping their arms, rocking, tapping, or spinning themselves or objects in a continuous pattern.…
Considered the most influential Autism speaker and humane animal treatment activist in the world, Dr. Temple Grandin has changed the face of slaughter house designs and functions immensely throughout the United States.…
A teacher’s goal is to maximize his or her student’s potential. Traditionally, the biggest challenge for students with disabilities was to meet their needs in the areas of social, behavioral, cognitive, perceptive and motor skills (Adebisi et al. 14). A learning disability is defined by the Schwab Foundation as a person who is diagnosed by a professional with a difficulty as a result of a CNS dysfunction in the areas or reading, writing, math, science, reasoning speaking, or listening. In order to meet the diverse needs of these students, they were traditionally removed from the mainstream classroom and placed in a separate classroom to learn. Although this was the best way to meet the students’ academic needs, their social needs were grossly…
The concepts of the proposal were founded on the possibility of the use of the Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) in helping people suffering from developmental disabilities. The research would be aimed to determine the effective use of the LMA design of body, effort, shape, and space, ordinarily called the BESS approach as a remedy for the developmental disability conditions such as autism and Down syndrome (ADTA n.d). When taking a LMA class and volunteering at the Arc I became motivated to further explore the BESS method. The Arc is a community-based organization committed to serving those with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing services, support, and advocacy. I felt this approach would be beneficial and valuable for those…
The sensory room is a classroom that had some workout balls, mats, a table with manipulatives, and some weighted vests and blankets. Here he could move around and work his gross motor…
After meeting Leslie Kuhn,I may have had a central purpose with my life. Well, not Leslie A. Kuhn of MSU herself, but whenever I describe Lilian, their characters seem quite parallel. Not only is she the most brilliant lady I have ever met,but she also exhibits a compassionate heart. Sadly, people never recognize Lilian as the beautiful individual she is or what she has to offer. While the society describe her as ''challenged'',I came to recognize her as unexpected role model.…
I: During this semester, I worked with some individuals who had the disability, “cerebral palsy”. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder caused by physical, social, or historical factors from the mother either prior, during, or after the individual is born. The disability causes the individual to have limited mobility on his or her left or right side of the body. Polzin, Odle, Davidson, and Longe (2007) express some important finding about cerebral palsy such as; CP is not a specific disorder but describes a broad group of neurological and physical problems… [Relating to] the cerebral cortex, a part of the brain that controls voluntary muscle movement (par. 2). For this reason the body don’t function as “normal” individuals and this demographic…
