It all started in Queens, New York, NY, in September, 1961. Jean Nidetch was a 214 pound woman who was becoming discouraged by her lack of ability to lose weight. She called together some friends to admit her problem and ask for guidance. They began to meet every week and talk about healthy eating and weight loss. Soon, they decided to make the meetings public. The first meeting was held in a loft in New York in May, 1963, where more than 400 people attended. The company later peaked the interest of the H.J. Heinz Company who eventually bought it in 1978 (“The History of Weight Watchers”).
