Although it is generally accepted that regular exercise provides substantial health benefits for individuals with type 2 diabetes, the exact exercise type (aerobic vs. resistance vs. both) has been unclear. “Given that the 2008 Federal Physical Activity Guidelines recommend aerobic exercise in combination with resistance training, the unanswered question as to whether for a given amount of time the combination of aerobic exercise and resistance training is better than either alone has significant clinical and public health importance,” the authors write. Timothy S. Church and colleagues conducted the HART-D trial, which compared among 262 sedentary women and men with type 2 diabetes the effect of aerobic exercise, resistance training, and a combination of both on change in hemoglobin A1c levels (HbA1c; a minor component of hemoglobin [the substance of red blood cells that carries oxygen to the cells] and to which glucose [blood sugar] is bound; HbA1c levels are used to monitor the control of diabetes mellitus). Study participants were 63.0 percent women, 47.3 percent nonwhite, average age of 56 years, HbA1c level of 7.7 percent and duration of diabetes of 7.1 years. The individuals were enrolled in the 9-month exercise program between April 2007 and August 2009.…

What comes to your mind when you think of weight lifting? Ripped muscled men lifting barbells and other heavy equipment, of course. The vision conjured is of gym rats waging a contest over who does more repetitions of the heaviest weights. Hi Rupinder, Thank you for this great presentation on food safety and health. Like Charina stated, food safety is very important in the prevention of food-borne diseases and illnesses among all communities. I always make sure I wash my hands very thoroughly before I start preparing my food. We will never know how our food was handled before being displayed at the grocery store to purchase, so it is very important that we wash raw foods well before cooking. Thanks for sharing the use of a thermometer to measure the internal temperature of cooked foods, especially if it is a meat dish to ensure it is adequately cooked and safe to eat.…

Recently, this week to be exact, I started school at Liberty University Online Private Academy (it’s a mouthful, I know). In doing so, I don’t ever have to leave my bedroom in doing my classes, nor do I have to get up every morning obscenely early as if I was going to a regular high school (I’m just really not a morning person... ).Being able to have the opportunity to do all of this made me realize how aggravating public school can be compared to online school. Not only that, but how aggravating going to public school with anxiety can be.…

A fitness test is a great tool to utilize in order to measure cardiovascular fitness and understand how hard the body is working during physical activity. To measure a person’s overall fitness, four types of tests must be performed: aerobic fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition (President’s Challenge). Each component is tested individually for cardiovascular strength, the ability to perform every day activities, joint movement and flexibility, and amounts of fat on the body respectively (President’s Challenge). Each component of the fitness test is measured with different types of activity.
