Strength training, or weight lifting as it is more commonly known is an important form of exercise for people of all ages. Weight training has existed since the times of ancient Egypt, and has even made appearances in the Olympics. If practiced consistently over a long period of time, weight training can have significant positive effects on the body, as well as some unsatisfactory effects if not practiced correctly. Before I break down weight training and its effects, I will start off with most of the misconceptions that people have about weight training. One of the most common myths about weight training is that is stunts growth and weakens bones. Stunted growth only occurs when you let heavy weight drop on you which causes it to damage your growth plates. In addition to not stunting growth, weight training strengthens bones and ligaments so that your body is better prepared for strenuous exercise. This occurs, because when you work out or participate in strenuous activity you tear your muscle fibers, which causes your body to repair them bigger and stronger than they were before. According to fitness experts at the American Council on Exercise, children can start weight training as early as age 14, and experience many benefits. Most likely, you have heard coaches and trainers use the phrase “No pain no gain”, or “Feel the burn” to push you, but if you overuse your muscles while engaging in weight training it will result in persistent a pain that may or may not last a couple of days. Weight lifting can also cause stunted growth; however, it will only occur if someone drops heavy weight on themselves which would damage their growth plates, stopping their growth.
