The incorporation of resistance training was thought to be negative for young athletes due to the high concern for injuries such as strains and sprains. This idea has now been shown to be false as the use of advanced training methods that include weight training are now recommended as a part of performance enhancing and injury preventing programs (Avery Faugenbaum and Gregory Myer 3). While some physicians believed that the usage of weight training would only lead to more injuries, it is clear now that using weights can aid in injury prevention. This can be seen as significant gains in strength have been noted in programs involving weight training without the occurrence of injury (Faugenbaum and Myer 5).
