The Vietnam War took place from 1954 to 1973. The United States became involved in this war because of the fear of communism spreading though out South East Asia. Throughout the war the American people started losing support because of all the men we were losing. All of the troops were finally pulled out of Vietnam, but not before the U.S. lost more than 58,000 soldiers. The movie Letters Home from Vietnam shows real film from the war, and shows what the American troops really endured. The title to the book, “The Things They Carried,” by Tim O’Brien is symbolic because soldiers carry, not only physical but emotional things during war.

The psychological and emotional part of war is what stays with soldiers even when the battle is over. Fear is a major emotional weight. The fear of the enemy trying to kill you every hour of the day, and not knowing where or who your enemy is. This was a problem for the soldiers because even though they were fighting with the South Vietnamese the people there was no distinct difference like race or how they dressed. Because of this they had to be alert at all times. Fear can really take a toll on someone. When they are scared they lose confidence. The things that they feared the most was that they didn’t know who they could trust. Most of the fighting was done in the jungle. Fighting in the thick jungle was extremely though because your enemy could be a few yards away and the soldiers wouldn’t even know it. When soldiers are deployed they are away from home for a long time. Being away from home for so long the soldiers would become home sick and become emotionally distracted. In the short story “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, the main character is always thinking about a women who he likes back home. Since he is distracted and not being emotionally in the battle it cost the life of one of his friends. This examples shows that the emotional effects of war cannot only hurt yourself, but it can also hurt the men around you. Another emotional
