“The Journey to Good Health Begins Here”
It started with the diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus, the journey to understanding its cause, and attaining a logical solution to stopping its progression. Carolinas Weight Management and Wellness Center was the open door for my journey to good health.
When I was younger, I didn’t have three meals a day. I was glad if I had two meals in one day. This was the result of my mom being a single parent equaling a single income. I liked being thin, but didn’t enjoy being hungry. I jogged three miles in the morning, exercised indoors for 30 minutes, and biked three miles in the evening. I gained 10 pounds with the first child, 6 pounds with the second, and 3 pounds with the last. The medical staff constantly threatened to have me force fed if I didn’t gain weight. I explained I was eating right and exercising. I would eat, get sick, eat, get sick, then stopping when I became too tired to continue. They made sure to note the birthweight of each child. The first was 8 pounds and 4 ounces. The second was 7 pounds and 7 ounces. The last was 8 pounds and 12 ounces. After each child was born, I tried to diet. This is a result from acid reflux, GERD and preludes esophageal cancer. When the “C” word is spoken, even though I was never diagnosed with it, “cancer” is the only thing you hear. I had to do something. I researched Barrett’s extensively. The only thing I wanted to do was to stop its progression and promote healing. My primary physician placed me on medication that would minimize the production of stomach acid. I still wanted to do more. I researched Roux-en-Y, a bariatric surgery. I thought if the acid was not able to travel up the esophagus, I would heal. I brought the research to my physician and he referred me to Carolinas Weight Management and Wellness Center.
The facility offered two weight program choices that lead to wellness. One was the Medical Pathway and the other was the Surgical Pathway. The medical weight management program provided a professional medical team, bariatrician, registered dietitian, personalized exercise program, physical assessment, classes, and support groups. The surgical weight loss program provided an education session, consultation, bariatricians, mental health providers, dietitians, exercise specialists, and insurance
